UVU PLAYS FINAL WAC ROAD MATCHES AT UNLV, GCU
Utah Valley University takes its final road trip of the regular season this week with matches at UNLV and Grand Canyon. The Wolverines (5-8-2, 2-3-2) face the Rebels on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. MT in Las Vegas and the Lopes on Sunday at 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT in Phoenix. Both games will air live on the WAC Digital Network.
WAC STANDINGS UPDATE
The Wolverines are among a cluster of six teams separated by just two points in the standings. Eight of the 11 WAC teams have three games remaining with remaining three with just two matches left. UVU is currently tied for eighth and needs to surpass at least one team over the final two weeks of the season to earn the trip to Las Vegas for the tournament in November, for which the top seven teams qualify. The Wolverines (eight points) are tied with UTRGV and one point back of Grand Canyon and UMKC, and two behind CSU Bakersfield and San José State.Â
SERIES HISTORY
UNLV leads the all-time series with Utah Valley, 3-2, including a 1-0 win for the Rebels in last season's WAC Tournament in Orem. UVU is 0-1 in the only prior meeting between the teams in Las Vegas. Utah Valley is 3-0 all-time against Grand Canyon including a 3-1 win last season in Orem. Last time UVU played in Phoenix, in 2015, they erased an early 2-0 deficit to win 3-2.Â
QUOTABLE
"This team has absolutely everything to play for — our backs are against the wall and we're fighting for our lives," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "This team's resiliency and response to adversity has never wavered, and we're more determined than ever heading into two massive matches at UNLV and GCU."Â
LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley picked up three crucial points in a 2-0 win over Houston Baptist in the only match last week. Alec Felix scored the game-winning goal in the game's ninth minute and Austin Buxton added his first goal of the year, in the 33rd minute. Joseph Wheelwright made a trio of saves to earn the clean sheet. UVU had a lopsided, 26-4, edge in overall shots in the game.
ABOUT UNLV
UNLV (8-8-0, 5-2-0) is currently third in the WAC with 15 points, trailing 15th-ranked Air Force and No. 22 Seattle U, who both have 17 points. MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List selection Danny Musovski leads the WACÂ and is fifth nationally in both goals (12) and points (29). His goals per game (1.00) and points per game average (2.42) both rank first in the country. The Rebels host Seattle U on Sunday before closing out the regular season on Nov. 4 at Grand Canyon.
ABOUT GCU
Grand Canyon (6-9-0, 3-4-0), hosts Seattle U on Friday before what could turn out to be a nearly do-or-die contest for UVU and GCU on Sunday night. The Lopes play their last three games at home and are looking to earn a berth in the WAC Tournament in their first eligible season. The Lopes' Niki Jackson, like Musovski and Utah Valley's Paul Hoffmeister, is also a MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List selection. He has scored seven goals, which is tied for third in the WAC.Â
COMING UP
The Wolverines close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. against No. 22 Seattle U in the final home game of the season. The game will be Senior Night with seven UVU players honored prior to the match.Â
