OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University dropped its final non-conference dual of the season, 34-3, to No. 22 Stanford on Friday night at Lockhart Arena.
 
The Cardinal (9-3) featured seven wrestlers ranked in Friday's initial RPI rankings with eight of the 10 ranked in at least one of the major polls. UVU (5-5) had four wrestlers make debuts in the RPI ranking on Friday.
 
The Wolverines' lone winner on the night was Grant LaMont at 149 pounds. LaMont jumped ahead 6-1 and withstood a late comeback attempt from Pawelski to earn the victory.
 
"We didn't do a good job of finishing when we got to their legs and it allowed them to counter. And we didn't get enough shots off throughout the match," said UVU head coach Greg Williams. "As we've gone on this year we feel like we've progressed every week. Tonight, not so much, and Stanford has a lot to do with that. They're very solid throughout their lineup."

In the first match of the night, Stanford's Austin Flores got a late takedown and four-point nearfall to end the first period, seizing control of the 184-pound match over UVU's Will Sumner. Flores won the match 9-3.
 
In one of the marquee matchups of the night, No. 17 (NCAA RPI) Tanner Orndorff was edged, 6-5, by No. 16 Josh Marchok in a thrilling finish. Orndorff took a 4-3 lead on a takedown with 1:21 left in the match before an escape tied it at 4-4, but Marchok picked up a takedown with just 14 seconds left to secure the win and give Stanford a 6-0 team advantage.
 
In another bout featuring both wrestlers ranked in several poll, 10th-ranked Nathan Butler earned another decision for the Cardinal, topping No. 18 Dustin Dennison, 6-0, at 285 pounds.
 
Stanford got two more decisions, from No. 16 Gabriel Townsell (125 pounds) and Connor Schram (133 pounds), before 6th-ranked Joey McKenna recorded a fall (2:51) over Trevor Willson.
 
Following LaMont's win, Stanford won the last three bouts by decision, major decision and fall. In the final match, No. 21 Kimball Bastian took a 2-1 lead over No. 17 Peter Galli in the second period, but Galli scored on a reversal before earning the fall with 25 seconds left in the period.
 
The Wolverines close out their home schedule on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT in a Big 12 dual against Northern Colorado. Prior to the match the team's lone senior, Trevor Willson, will be honored as part of Senior Day.
