Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CSU Bakersfield tops shorthanded Utah Valley, 55-39

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –A 19-point effort from CSU Bakersfield guard Addi Walters off the bench guided the Roadrunners to a 55-39 win over Utah Valley women's basketball Thursday night inside the Icardo Center.

CSU Bakersfield (12-12, 7-3 WAC) received a combined 31 points from its bench and nine scorers overall to snap UVU's (8-17, 3-7 WAC) two-game win streak entering the contest. The Wolverines, who were without the services of Mariah Seals and Sam Lubcke, were led by career highs of 11 points and eight rebounds from freshman forward Sariah Wi Neera.

The Roadrunners got out to an early 9-1 lead before UVU freshman guard Gabrielle Leos stopped the CSUB run with UVU's first bucket of the game at the top of the three-point line. Junior guard Taylor Gordon snuck past the defense into the lane for a layup to extend the Wolverine run to 5-0 and bring the score to 9-6.

After CSU Bakersfield went up by 15 with a 12-3 run in the second quarter, the Wolverines closed the period on a 5-2 run to pull to within 12 at the half on a pair of Gordon and Wi Neera layups along with a free throw from Gordon.

Following Gordon's exit from the contest the third quarter, UVU used a 9-2 run over the final 2:10 of the period that extended two minutes into the fourth and cut the deficit to its lowest the rest of the way at 43-32. Wi Neera scored four of her 11 points during that stretch, while Jordan Holland capped the run with the fourth of UVU's five three-pointers on the evening.

Leos, who filled in for Seals, never left the floor as she logged a career-best 40 minutes and was one of three Wolverines to finish with six points. She also posted career highs of four assists and five steals.

Gordon finished with eight points, Holland and Delos Santos also chipped in six a piece and Leya Harvey scored two to round out the Woverine scoring.

Seals, who missed game action for the first time in her career, started and played all 84 games of her career prior to Thursday. The junior guard ranks fourth all-time in career starts in UVU program history.

Despite the double-digit defeat, the Wolverines finished with an advantage in three-point shooting percentage with a 38.5 percent clip from downtown compared to just 29.2 percent for the 'Runners. Leos and Holland each went 2-of-5 from long range and Delos Santos made 1-of-2 from beyond the arc.

Utah Vally next travels to Phoenix, Ariz., to close its two-game road trip on Saturday at Grand Canyon. Tip-off for the contest is set for 2 p.m. MT.
