LOGAN, Utah – The Utah Valley University softball team found itself on the wrong end of an 11-2 six-inning decision to Utah State on Wednesday afternoon at LeRee & LeGrand Johnson Field in Logan. The contest was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, but game two was called in the second inning due to heavy rainfall and lightning in the area.
Â
UVU dropped to 7-11 on the year with the setback while the Aggies improved to 19-6 with the win.
Â
GAME ONE
The Wolverines struck first in what was supposed to be the first game of the doubleheader with a single run in the top of the first inning to jump out to a 1-0 advantage. Following back-to-back singles from
Courtney Beavers and
Caragh Morris, the reigning WAC Hitter of the Week
Lyndsay Steverson continued to produce for the Wolverines by driving Beavers home with an RBI single to give UVU the early lead.
Â
The Aggies then wasted little time countering back with a two-out two-run double from Sarina Jaramillo in the last of the first to give USU a 2-1 lead.
Â
The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the third, when USU managed to drive in five runs to take a 7-1 lead Utah State's Riley Plogger and Sydney Hart provided the big hits in the frame for the Aggies with back-to-back homers.
Â
USU then extended its lead to 8-1 in the fourth with a solo home run from Paxton Provost, but UVU struck back with an unearned run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-2. Utah Valley's
Kirsten Andersen reached on an error and later came around to score on another USU miscue to pull the Wolverines to within six runs.
Â
The Aggies then put the game away in the sixth with a run-rule walk-off home from Plogger. The round tripper marked Plogger's second of the game.
Â
USU's Kellie White (9-2) earned the win after allowing just one earned run on three hits, while UVU's
Makayla Shadle (1-2) was tagged with the loss.
Â
Morris and Steverson led the Wolverines at the plate by each going 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Beavers finished 1-for-2 with a run scored. Plogger paced the Aggies by going 3-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and five runs batted in.
Â
GAME TWO
The Wolverines once again managed to push across a first-inning run to take a 1-0 lead. Following a leadoff walk by Beavers and a stolen base,
Brittney Vansway drove her home with an RBI double to right center to give Utah Valley the early advantage.
Â
The Aggies then tied things up in the last of the first on a solo home run from Victoria Saucedo to knot the game at 1-1. The contest then went into a rain and lightning delay in the top of the second and was shortly called after that due to heavy rainfall and lightning in the Logan area.
Â
There is a possibility that the second game of the twin bill will be made up in late April, but will be officially announced at a later date.
Â
UP NEXT FOR UVU
The Wolverines will conclude their current midweek trip with a pair of games at Idaho State on Thursday. Thursday's twin bill is slated to begin at noon and 2 p.m. at ISU's Miller Ranch Stadium in Pocatello.
