OREM, Utah – Led by senior Karson Payton, the green squad defeated the white squad, 2-0, in the annual Green & White intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at Clyde Field.
Payton opened the scoring with the game-winning goal in the 10th minute when he found a loose ball and lofted it over the head of keeper
Joseph Wheelwright from 12 yards out.
"This is an important game for a lot of reasons. It's good for us to get out and compete against ourselves. We've been working on a lot over the past week and we started to see a lot of that hard work in training come out tonight," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "And of course, to be in front of our fans here and in this environment is always a treat."
The green team would add to their lead when forward
Austin Buxton put away a penalty kick into the bottom-right corner of the net in the 38th minute of the shortened 60-minute match.
Goalkeeper
Elliott Rubio recorded a clean sheet for the green team, saving seven shots on goal.
The Wolverines now shift their focus to the season-opening match against No. 16 Akron at Clyde Field on Friday, Aug. 25 at 7:00 p.m. MT. Fans can visit GoUVU.com/tickets for season and individual game tickets.
