Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

UVU falls at CSUN in overtime, 2-1

NORTHRIDGE—CSUN's Marissa Favela found the back of the net in the 92nd minute to led the Matadors to a 2-1 overtime win over Utah Valley on Sunday morning at Matador Soccer Field.

Utah Valley falls to 1-3-0 on the season with each of its three setbacks coming in overtime periods. CSUN, which won the Big West title last season, improves to 2-0-2 with the win.

Utah Valley fell behind 1-0 in the 18th minute after Ariana Tran headed a ball over the line after a scrum in the box off a corner kick. Favela earned the assist on the score. The CSUN goal in the first half marked the first time all season that the Wolverines had trailed in regulation.

"Unfortunately, we didn't show up until 35 minutes into the game," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. "We changed our mentality with about 10 minutes left in the first half and found a good rhythm and started to create some chances. We had a good heart-to-heart at halftime and the team's reaction was great."

Breanna DeWaal scored the UVU equalizer in the 60th minute as she made a move to shake off a defender inside the box and fired a shot from the right side towards the far post to tie the game at 1-1. The goal marks DeWaal's third goal of the season.

The Wolverines nearly came away with the win as DeWaal fired a shot off the crossbar with just 31 seconds remaining in the regulation that would have given UVU the go-ahead goal in the final seconds.

"We were a much better team in the second half," said Lemay. "We were a little unlucky as Bre's shot hit the crossbar late and we also thought we had earned a penalty kick that didn't go our way. In the end, we just ran out of gas. Playing the double overtime match on Friday night and traveling to California for a hot Sunday morning match really took it out of us with the quick turnaround."

The Matadors secured the win in overtime in the 92nd minute after Tran sent in a pass from the midfield to Favela, who then sent a ball into the net towards the left post. Favela led CSUN with a team-high five shots, including two on net.

DeWaal led Utah Valley with a match-high six shots, including a match-best three on goal. Breanna McCarter and Doriana Moul helped with two shots apiece. Brooklyn Nielsen played the entire match in the box for the Wolverines, finishing the game with a season-high five saves.

"We've got to be one of the best 1-3 teams in the nation," said Lemay. We're still in a good place. I know the team is disappointed with the result because they've done everything we've asked of them. We just have to stay true to the course and realize that things will start bouncing our way and it will equal itself out."

Utah Valley continues road play this week as the team travels to Oklahoma to take on Tulsa and Oral Roberts on Sept. 1 and Sept. 3, respectively. UVU's home opener will take place on Sept. 8 against Wyoming.
