No. 14/18 Utah Valley hosts CSUN
No. 14/18 Utah Valley University is back on the pitch Friday night against CSUN, the 2016 Big West Tournament Champion. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. MT at Clyde Field in Orem and will air on the WAC Digital Network and UVU TV.

SERIES HISTORY
Friday's game marks the second straight season that UVU and CSUN will meet at Clyde Field. The Wolverines got a header from Skyler Milne in the 77th minute to edge the Matadors on Sept. 17 of last year, when UVU was ranked 19th in the country.

GREG MAAS ON FRIDAY'S MATCH
"Northridge is a technically sound, fast-paced, athletic side that will require a very disciplined performance on our part," said UVU head coach Greg Maas." "We have had a solid week of functional training, and this team is ready to return to our 12th Wolverines on Clyde Field as we team-up to defend The Den."

LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley sent a record crowd home happy in the season opener last Friday, August 25, with a 1-0 win over then-No. 13 Akron. A record student crowd joined an overall Clyde Field high of 4,351 fans.

Giovanny Vazquez scored the game-winner on a header in the 54th minute, on a Connor Salmon corner kick, to keep UVU perfect, 4-0-0, in season openers. Vazquez was part of a Wolverine defense that limited the Zips to just one shot on goal, which was saved by Elliott Rubio as he helped shutout his former club.

Vazquez received national attention earlier this week when he was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Week.

ABOUT CSUN
CSUN (1-1-0) split two home games over the opening weekend, defeating Siena, 2-1, before falling by the same score to Saint Mary's.  The Matadors' win came on a golden goal in the 96th minute by Emmanuel Usen Jr. In the CSUN lost to Saint Mary's, Daniel Trejo scored an equalizer in the 76th minute, only to see the Gaels score the gamewinner with less than four minutes to go in regulation.

The Matadors are the defending Big West Champions after defeating Cal State Fullerton in last season's tournament championship. CSUN is one of three Big West teams on UVU's 2017 schedule, including the Wolverines' next opponent, Cal State Fullerton, and Sacramento State.

RANKINGS UPDATE
Ranked No. 16 by TopDrawerSoccer.com and No. 18 by Soccer America in week one, Utah Valley moved up to 14th in both polls after the win over Akron. The Wolverines also debuted in both the United Soccer Coaches and College Soccer News polls at No. 18.

COMING UP
Next week, the Wolverines embark on two-match road swing through Southern California with matches at Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 8) and San Diego State (Sept. 10).
