UVU drops double-overtime heartbreaker to Washington State

OREM, Utah—Despite putting a couple of shots into the back of the net in just a 12-minute span in the second half, Utah Valley couldn't hang on as the Wolverines dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 double-overtime decision to Washington State on Thursday evening at Clyde Field.

The match marks the fourth overtime game of the season for the Wolverines, who fall to 3-6-0 on the season. UVU is 0-4-0 in overtime matches this year. Washington State improves to 5-1-1 on the season with the win.

"We played an unbelievable team in Washington State and there is a good reason they only have one loss on the season," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. "The message I gave our team after the match was that if we play like we did tonight then we wouldn't be sitting at 3-6 on the season. It's absolutely heartbreaking but there is a ton we can take out of it. We've proven we can play with a high-level Pac-12 team. Now, we have to come out and play the way we did tonight day-in and day-out."

Utah Valley was first to get on the scoreboard after Breanna DeWaal sent a corner kick into the box where Libby Weber headed it forward to Amber Tripp who one-touched it into the back of the goal for the score in the 73rd minute. The goal gave the Wolverines a 1-0 advantage.

Washington State struck back in the 76th minute as Maddy Haro found the back of the net for her second goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1.

Sydney Fitzpatrick scored the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute after a ball was cleared out of the box. DeWaal then headed the ball over to Fitzpatrick who then sent a bomb into the net from about 30 yards out.  Fitzpatrick's second goal of the season gave the Wolverines a 2-1 advantage.

Haro scored the equalizer for Washington State with just 32 seconds remaining in regulation after receiving a cross from the left side and heading it into the bottom right corner of the goal to tie the game 2-2 and send the match into overtime.

WSU's Morgan Weaver scored the game winner in the first minute of the second overtime period as Makam Gomera-Stevens sent a ball to Jamie Rita who was sprinting down the left side of the field.  Rita then one-touched it to the right side to Weaver who then punched into the net to give the Cougars the 3-2 win.

Washinton State outshot Utah Valley 13-5, including a 5-2 advantage on goal. Five Utah Valley players had one shot on the night. WSU's Weaver and Haro each tallied a match-high three shots.

Sarah Davis played all 100:30 minutes in goal for the Wolverines, tallying two saves.

"We're a resilient team," said Lemay. "Every time we have a chance to play we have an opportunity to get better and we did that tonight. The team is in good spirits. As hard as its been, they have bought in. We're going to move forward and I feel bad for anybody that has to play us next because we've got a chip on our shoulder."

Utah Valley now travels to Fargo, North Dakota to take on North Dakota State on Sunday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is set for noon on Sunday.
