OREM, Utah – A pair of second-half goals helped Sacramento State steal a win at Utah Valley University, 2-1, on Friday night at Clyde Field. The match came on Homecoming at UVU, in front of 2,795 fans.
"It was a frustrating match," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "We just didn't have a complete game today. There were moments in transition on counter attacks that needed to be a little bit sharper. We had an incredible Homecoming crowd tonight that was fantastic and we left a little bit to be desired for them. It was a tough one."
Paul Hoffmeister scored on a header in the 31st minute for the UVU's (3-2-0) goal and a first-half lead that held until the 70th minute.
Giovanny Vazquez took a free kick from
Karson Payton and headed it to Hoffmeister inside the goal box, who directed it just under the crossbar and in for his second goal of the season.
Josh Dull got the equalizer for the Hornets (3-3-0) nearly 40 minutes later, rebounding a shot by Dennis Cole and scoring with his left foot into the right-side netting. Cole's shot was saved by Vazquez, a team save, but pulled goalkeeper
Elliott Rubio out of position, allowing Dull the space he needed to score.
The game-winner came in the 78th minute from Brad Bumgarner, who cleaned up a loose ball from nine yards out when Vazquez and Rubio collided defending a cross into the box.
The Wolverines will now face No. 9/10 Omaha on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. The Mavericks were upset by Northern Illinois earlier on Friday at Clyde Field, 1-0, for their first loss of the season. Northern Illinois and Sacramento State will face off at 10:30 a.m. MT on Sunday morning. Admission to both matches on Sunday is free.
