Wolverines drop contest at Washington

SEATTLE – Utah Valley University dropped a 4-0 contest at Pac 12 Washington on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Field in the penultimate non-conference match of the season.

The Wolverines (3-4-0) now travel to Spokane to face Gonzaga on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT in the final non-league game of the season.

The Huskies (6-2-0) got a hat trick from Scott Menzies, who scored twice in the span of 59 seconds late in the first half, in the 40th and 41st minutes. He later scored his third goal of the game – and sixth of the season – in the 76th minute. The fourth Washington goal came in the 78th minute on a Huskies corner kick that resulted in an own goal.

Washington had a decided edge in shots, 21-5, and were on goal 15 times while UVU was not credited with a shot on goal. The Huskies, ranked No. 19 in the nation by College Soccer News, entered the week 12th in the country in scoring offense.

The Wolverines were whistled for 22 fouls, including six yellow cards, to the Huskies nine, one of which was a card. Joseph Wheelwright had 10 saves in goal for Utah Valley in his first career start, with the team credited for one save.

Following Sunday's match, the Wolverines will open Western Athletic Conference play next Friday, Sept. 29 at home against San José State.
