UTAH VALLEY HEADS TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR TWO
Utah Valley University hits the road for the first time this season with a two-match trip to Southern California. The Wolverines (1-1-0) will face Cal State Fullerton on Friday at 8:30 p.m. MT and San Diego State on Sunday at 8 p.m. MT as part of the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Tournament.
SERIES HISTORY
Utah Valley and Cal State Fullerton are meeting for the second time in the all-time series, with the Wolverines winning 2-1 during the 2015 season while UVU and SDSU are meeting for the first time.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines, ranked No. 14 at the time, surrendered two early goals and couldn't recover, falling 2-1 to CSUN last Friday night at home. Nic Harguindeguy scored a goal for Utah Valley, but the Wolverines could not avoid the upset.
MAAS ON THIS WEEKEND'S OPPONENTS
"Fullerton and San Diego State are two very talented and well-coached programs that will present challenging tests in our first road matches of the season," UVU head coach Greg Maas said. "We're getting healthier, and honestly, the boys are looking forward to the road — no distractions. This team is very resilient and determined, and we will approach these matches with a bit of a chip on our shoulders."
ABOUT CAL STATE FULLERTON
Cal State Fullerton is 2-2-0 overall, splitting two games over the Labor Day weekend. The Titans defeated Santa Clara, 2-0, at home last Friday before surrendering four second-half goals in a 5-0 loss to Portland. Fullerton will play San Francisco on Sunday at San Diego State.
ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE
San Diego State enters the weekend at 2-1-0 and hosts San Francisco on Friday night. The Aztecs, affiliate members of the Pac 12 in men's soccer, were NCAA Tournament qualifiers last season, falling in a penalty shootout to UNLV. After dropping its season opener to Army, 1-0, San Diego State has posted wins over Vermont, 2-0, and UCSB, 3-1. The Aztecs are one of two Pac 12 opponents on UVU's regular season schedule.
RANKINGS UPDATE
Utah Valley dropped out of the three of the four polls after last week's loss to CSUN. The Wolverines remained in the College Soccer News Top 30 though, at No. 27.
COMING UP
Next week, the Wolverines return home to host Sacramento State (Sept. 15) and No. 11/17 Omaha (Sept. 17) during a weekend that also includes Northern Illinois against the same two teams at Clyde Field.
