OREM, Utah – A pair of second-half goals helped San José State knock off Utah Valley University, 2-1, on Saturday night at Clyde Field. The loss snapped a streak of six straight wins for the Wolverines (9-6-0, 6-2-0).
"I'm gutted for the boys, and in particular, for our seniors in their final match on Clyde Field. That said, these seniors have led this program to many victories over the years, and we wouldn't be where we are today without them," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Tonight was tough on everyone. We weren't particular sharp, but we created enough scoring opportunities to get more out of the match. We'll learn from this and move forward, as we still have an opportunity to make a run at the WAC regular season championship."
Utah Valley took a 1-0 lead before halftime, on a goal in the 33rd minute from
Zahir Vazquez. Less than two minutes after the both Vazquez and
Luis Vargas -- who played his freshman season for SJSU -- entered the match, the two combined for the game's first goal. Vazquez slipped the ball to Vargas, who fed it right back and, after his first touch, Vazquez fired the ball just inside the far post and into the corner of the goal, over the shoulder of the charging goalkeeper.
The Spartans (6-7-2, 4-3-1) earned the equalizer in the 56th minute on a goal from Kalei Tolentino-Perry on an assists from Eduardo Buenfil and Angel Farias. The game-winner came in the 70th minute when Omar Lemus finished a deflected ball in front of the goal, with assists coming from Danny Sanchez and Max Allen.
The Wolverines had a 16-9 edge in shots and were on goal seven times to five from the Spartans.
UVU had several near-equalizers late in the match, including in the 84th minute when an
Austin Buxton header hit the crossbar and a
Blake Frischknecht rebound was saved.
It was the final home game of the 2018 season for UVU. Six of Utah Valley's seniors were honored prior to the match.
The loss dropped the Wolverines into second in the WAC standings after Air Force scored a goal in the 89th minute to top Seattle U on Saturday night in Colorado Springs. Utah Valley will play three road contests to finish the WAC regular season starting next Friday at Grand Canyon.
