LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Utah Valley University suffered a 2-1, double-overtime loss after a penalty kick was awarded to UNLV in the 102nd minute at Peter Johann Memorial Field on Sunday afternoon.
A foul was whistled in the box with the ball nearing the the out-of-bounds line to give the Rebels (10-8-1, 5-4-1) the chance for the golden goal, which was converted by Marco Gonzalez. It's the second straight overtime stunner to go against the Wolverines (9-8-0, 6-4-0).
The game was scoreless for over 69 minutes when
Austin Buxton scored his fifth goal of the season to give UVU a one-nil advantage. Buxton took a pass from
Mark Brown and, after his initial shot attempt was blocked, recovered the ball that eluded the UNLV goalkeeper and scored with his left foot past a Rebel defender.
UNLV got the equalizer in the 79th minute, from Gonzalez on an assist from John Lynam. The brace gives Gonzalez nine goals on the year.
The Wolverines will finish the regular season on Saturday afternoon at No. 8 Air Force. UVU is currently tied with Seattle U in third place in the WAC, with the tournament set to begin on Wednesday, Nov. 7 in Seattle.
