#5 UVU hosts #4 Grand Canyon in WAC Tournament opener

UTAH VALLEY ENTERS WAC TOURNAMENT PLAY AS NO. 5 SEED, WILL TAKE ON FOURTH-SEEDED GRAND CANYON
The Utah Valley University women's soccer team will host its first-ever WAC Soccer Tournament this week at Clyde Field. The Wolverines earned the No. 5 seed and will take on fourth-seeded Grand Canyon on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 3 p.m. MT. Top-seed Kansas City awaits the winner of UVU and GCU in the semifinals on Friday night.

Utah Valley (4-13-2) looks to rebound for tournament play after going winless since a victory over CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 12. Since then, the Wolverines went 0-3-1 to close out WAC play. UVU holds a 2-3-1 record at home this season.

The Wolverines hold an all-time 5-3-1 record at the WAC Tournament since joining the league in 2013. Utah Valley went 1-0-1 at the tournament last year with a win over Grand Canyon in the semifinals before tying Seattle U, 1-1, in the championship match. UVU then claimed the title over the Redhawks on penalty kicks, 3-1.

Sadie Brockbank leads the Wolverines with seven goals this season. Whitney Paskins has four goals this year, while Sara Callister, Julianna Carter, and Alexis Peterson each have two. Brockbank also leads the Wolverines with 51 shots, including a team-best 21 shots on goal. Five UVU players are tied for the team lead in assists with three each. Sarah Davis leads the team in the box with an 3-5-1 record and four shutouts. She has 35 saves and owns a team-best 1.05 goals against average.

As a team, Utah Valley has netted 21 goals while allowing opponents 30. The Wolverines average 12.1 shots a match with a .415 shots on goal percentage. The Wolverines are holding opponents to a 1.58 goals per game average.

UVU AT THE WAC TOURNAMENT
The Wolverines hold an all-time 5-3-1 record at the WAC Tournament since joining the league in 2013. Utah Valley went 1-0-1 at the tournament last year with a win over tournament host Grand Canyon in the semifinals and a 1-1 tie against Seattle U in the championship. UVU then claimed the title over SU on penalty kicks, 3-1. UVU enters a first round match for the fourth time in team history. The Wolverines hold a 2-1 record in WAC Tournament first round matches. This week marks the first time in school history that the Wolverines have hosted the WAC Women's Soccer Tournament.

BROADCAST INFO
Friday night's match at Grand Canyon will be broadcast live on the WAC Digital Network at WACsports.com/live. Mychal Clanton and Jordan Angeli will be handling the play-by-play and color duties. UVU play-by-play man Brandon Crow will be on the sidelines for the broadcasts this week.

BRUCE AND MOORE EARN POSTSEASON WAC HONORS
Utah Valley's Hannah Bruce and Madeline Moore have been named to the 2018 All-WAC team, the league office announced following a vote of the WAC's nine head coaches.
 
Bruce helped anchor the UVU back line to four shutouts during WAC play this season. The junior defender helped the UVU defense limit opponents to a 1.58 goals per game average, including an impressive 0.88 goals per game average during conference play. She helped the Wolverines hold opponents to 11.9 shots per game during WAC play. Bruce also has one assist and four shots this year. She has led the team in minutes this season with 1,680.
 Moore has started and played in each of UVU's 19 matches this season. The freshman midfielder has tallied one assist, 13 shots, and two shots on goal this season. She has played a major factor in UVU's four shutouts this season on the defensive end. Moore ranks second on the team in minutes played at 1,516.

ABOUT GRAND CANYON
Grand Canyon enters the week with a 6-12-2 overall record into Orem this week. The team wrapped up regular season play with a pair of ties. The 'Lopes played CSU Bakersfield to a 3-3 double overtime tie on the road last week. Sophomore forward Camryn Larson scored twice for and senior midfielder McKenzie Cook netted the third and final goal in the tie at CSUB. Cook and Larson lead the team this season with six goals apiece. Cook fronts the team with15 points. Larson follows closely behind with 14 points. Senior defender Kelsey Smith leads the team with four assists, to go along with two goals for eight points on the year.  Redshirt senior Abby Burton leads the team in goal. She has played all 20 matches this season, collecting 101 saves with five shutouts. As a team, Grand Canyon has scored 21 goals while allowing 29. The team averages 1.05 goals per game. GCU is coached by Derek Leader, who is now in his third season with the team. He holds a 19-34-6 record at GCU.

SERIES HISTORY VS. GRAND CANYON
Utah Valley and Grand Canyon meet on the pitch for the 12th time on Wednesday afternoon. The game will be a rematch of last year's WAC Tournament semifinal game, which the Wolverines won, 1-0.  UVU holds an all-time 7-3-1 advantage over the 'Lopes. The two teams played to a double-overtime 0-0 tie earlier in the season in Phoenix. UVU holds a 4-1 all-time record over GCU in games played on the Clyde Field pitch in Orem. The Wolverines took a 1-0 win over GCU the last time the two teams met in Orem on Oct. 20, 2017.

CLYDE FIELD MAGIC
Utah Valley holds an impressive 73-37-11 all time record at Clyde Field. The team has lost just seven matches over the past four seasons (three this season) on the home pitch. UVU went 5-1-0 at home last season, including wins over Wyoming, Seattle U, New Mexico State, UT Rio Grande Valley, and Grand Canyon. The Wolverines went 5-2-1 during the 2016 season and were unbeaten at home during the 2015 season with a 9-0-1 mark. UVU has consistently ranked in the top-40 nationally in attendance. The team holds a 2-3-1 home mark this year.
