UVU travels to CBU, CSUB in WAC play

UVU PLAYS TWO IN CALIFORNIA
Coming off of two home wins in WAC play last week, the Utah Valley University men's soccer team heads to Southern California for contests at California Baptist and CSU Bakersfield. The Wolverines (5-5-0, 2-1-0) play at CBU on Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT/4:30 p.m. MT and at CSUB on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT. Both matches can be seen live on the WAC Digital Network.

"This is an important weekend on the road at CBU and CSUB — every match and point is critical when it comes to the final table in the WAC," UVU head coach Greg Maas, who is one victory shy of 50 in his four-plus seasons at UVU. "The boys are playing well, we're coming off of two very good results at home, and now it's critical we carry that momentum forward against two sides that are also very good on their home pitch."

LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley earned six points with wins over UT Rio Grande Valley (2-1) and Incarnate Word (3-0). Blake Frischknecht scored two goals for his first brace in the win over the then-No. 32 (NCAA RPI) Vaqueros. In Saturday's Homecoming win over UIW, Luis Garza, Zahir Vazquez and Austin Buxton each scored goals with Carter Johnson assisting on two of them. The Wolverines also kept the Cardinals without a shot on goal, earning a third clean sheet for Joseph Wheelwright so far this season.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
California Baptist is in its first season of Division I competition after winning the Learfield Director's Cup last year in the final season as members of NCAA Division II. On the pitch, the Lancers are 5-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the WAC with a 2-1 win over preseason favorite Seattle U in their first league contest. CBU is also unbeaten at home in three contests. Friday marks the first meeting between UVU and CBU in men's soccer.

ABOUT CSU BAKERSFIELD
CSU Bakersfield, which hosts 7th-ranked Air Force on Friday, is 3-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the WAC after a 2-0 road win at Grand Canyon and a scoreless draw at UNLV last week. The all-time series is tied (2-2-1) between the teams with the Runners winning the most recent match up, a 1-0 shutout of UVU last season in Bakersfield.

UP NEXT
Following this weekend, Utah Valley will play three straight at home with one of those contests coming next Saturday, Oct. 13 against UMKC. That will start a stretch of the final six matches of the WAC season as the Wolverines look to earn a berth into the WAC Tournament in November.
