LOGAN, Utah— Utah Valley was unable to overcome poor-shooting and costly turnovers in a 65-46 loss on the road against in-state rival Utah State in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The loss drops the Wolverines to 1-3, while the Aggies improved to 4-0 on the season.
"Utah State is playing at a really high level right now and they are relentless on the glass," said Utah Valley head coach
Mark Pope. "Their coach has done an unbelievable job in growing the excitement and the energy with which his guys play."
Utah State used a 7-0 run to take a 9-3 lead four minutes into the game. After going back and forth, the Wolverines held Utah state scoreless for 5:56 to tie the game at 16 a piece. The Aggies then went on a 14-2 run over the last 5:04 of the half to take a lead 32-20 into intermission.
Conner Toolson led all scorers in the half with nine points and
Wyatt Lowell add five points off the bench. Utah Valley was plagued by seven turnovers which resulted in nine points for the Aggies. The Wolverines were also outrebounded 19-26 in the opening half and trailed 8-0 on fast breaks.
Utah Valley used a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 40-33, but Utah State responded with an 21-4 run to push the lead back out to 61-37. The Aggies were then able to hold off the Wolverines' comeback attempt. Utah Valley had an 8-0 run late in the game but it was too little too late.
TJ Washington led the Wolverines with 14 points and six rebounds and
Conner Toolson finished with 11 points. Sam Merrill led the Aggies with 14 points.
The Wolverines shot just 17 of 55 from the field, including 3 of 13 from three and 9 of 16 from the foul line. Utah Valley finished with 17 turnovers, resulting in 24 points for the Utah State. The Wolverines were also outrebounded 50-37, including 17-8 on the offensive glass.
Utah Valley continues on the road as they travel to Las Vegas to face Hartford in the MGM Resorts Main Event on Nov. 19 in the Cox Pavilion.
