UVU suffers 3-0 setback to UMKC in WAC Tournament Semifinal

OREM—The Utah Valley University women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to Kansas City in the semifinals of the WAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday night at Clyde Field.

The Wolverines wrap up their season with a 5-14-2 overall record, while UMKC improves to 16-4-0 and secures a trip to the WAC Tournament championship match against Seattle U on Sunday.

"First of all, I want to let our seniors know how much we appreciate everything they have given to our program," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. "These seniors have represented our team and the university with the highest standards. They are terrific young women and we certainly wish them the very best moving forward. I'm proud of how our team played tonight. They left it all out there on the field. They gave everything they had. UMKC is obviously a very nice team but we had all sorts of chances with balls flying off the crossbar and against the post. We definitely created good opportunities. If we didn't have bad luck tonight, we wouldn't have had any luck at all."

UVU seniors Sarah Davis, Sara Callister, Alexis Peterson, Laken Flinders, Breanna McCarter, Linley Brown, and Leesa Stowe step off the Clyde Field pitch for the final time. The seniors have helped push the UVU program to new heights with multiple WAC Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Kansas City took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Kelsey Mothershead received a pass from Amanda Sampson and found the back of the net. The goal helped the 'Roos take a 1-0 lead into the break.

UMKC's Ryan Childers scored in the 56th minute and Lexie Howard added another in the 66th minute to secure Kansas City the win.

UMKC out-shot UVU 18-16 on the night, including an 8-6 advantage on frame. Sadie Brockbank and McCarter led the Wolverines with four shots apiece. Brockbank led UVU with three shots on goal.  Amber Trip had three shots, while Callister and Flinders each had two. Davis led UVU in the box, playing all 90 minutes with five saves.

UMKC now moves on to the WAC Tournament championship game against Seattle U on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Clyde Field.
