SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Valley University fell in its first road contest of the season, 85-47, at Pac-12 Utah on Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes (7-0) made 13-of-24 from three (54.2 percent) and took advantage of 27 UVU turnovers, scoring 33 points off of the giveaways.
Sophia Jacobsson led the Wolverines (4-3) with 11 points while
Eve Braslis added eight points and five rebounds and
Jordan Holland scored six and pulled down eight rebounds on a night when Utah Valley had a 35-33 edge on the glass. Utah got 20 points apiece from Megan Huff and Sarah Porter. Porter finished 6-of-7 from three and 7-of-8 overall from the field.
"We're focusing on trying to be mentally and physically tough and I thought we had some possessions, especially in the first half, where we filled assignments well and were doing those things but the second half it got away from us," said UVU head coach
Cathy Nixon. "I do think in some ways we were better today than we were on Thursday. But this was a good experience and next week we've got another chance to go on the road. We'll come back ready to go."
Alexis Cortez knocked down a pull-up jumper early to give the Wolverines a 5-4 lead before Utah's defensive pressure help the Utes go on an 11-0 run to take a 15-5 lead and force UVU timeout.
A 3-pointer by
Gabrielle Leos stopped the run out of the timeout and Utah Valley got a pair of buckets from Jacobsson, who scored seven in the opening quarter, to make it an 18-12 contest. Braslis scored on a put back right before the buzzer sounded to make it a 23-16 game after one.
The Utes hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the second quarter as part of a 7-2 run to take a 30-18 lead. UVU trailed 35-22 when Braslis hit a bucket, followed by a
Gabrielle Leos steal and a
Madison Grange three to make it a 35-27 game. Utah's lead hovered in that range and was eight when Megan Huff hit the Utes' sixth trey of the half for a 42-31 game at the break.
In the third, the Wolverines trailed 49-36 when Utah pulled away behind a 10-0 run and a UVU scoring drought that lasted nearly four minutes before
Va'e Malufau scored in the post to end the run.
The Wolverines continue their road swing next Tuesday at another in-state foe in Cedar City, Southern Utah, on Tuesday at noon MT. Next Thursday, Dec. 6 the Wolverines will be at Idaho State.
