OREM, Utah – Josie Williams scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to help Utah Valley University outlast Weber State University, 65-59, on Tuesday afternoon in Lockhart Arena.
The Wolverines (5-6) snapped a five-game skid with the win in their first home game since Nov. 29. The Wildcats (3-6) got a near triple-double from Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman, who finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
Jordan Holland, the reigning WAC Player of the Week, finished with 11 for UVU while
Eve Braslis and
Madison Grange scored eight points apiece.
Alexis Cortez recorded three blocks for the second straight game and also snagged nine rebounds. All 10 Wolverines who entered the game got into the scoring column.
"I think you saw a little glimpse of what Josie can do. To me, that was the end result of executing. I felt like when we were patient... we were able to get good shots," said UVU head coach
Cathy Nixon.
UVU led by two entering the final period and got a 3-pointer from
Emma Jones to go ahead 48-43. Weber State responded with a 10-2 run to take a 53-50 lead before Williams went to work. She went on her own 6-0 run and, after Welch-Coleman scored for Weber State, Williams extended it to a 10-2 spurt, scoring on five straight possessions and hitting all five of her attempts from the field to give the Wolverines a 60-55 lead.
Kori Pentzer hit a three to get the Wildcats within two with 90 seconds left, but UVU hit 5-of-6 from the line in the final minute to hold on.
After struggling to take care of the basketball in last Saturday's loss at Utah State, the Wolverines turned it over just eight times, while dishing out 16 assists as a team. Weber State also had 16 assists but turned it over 18 times, leading to 23 UVU points.
"That's a long time coming. We've been a little too generous with the basketball lately," said Nixon, referring to her team's assist-to-turnover ratio.
With the game tied 8-8 in the first quarter, Weber State ran off seven straight points to take a 15-8 lead. The Wildcats hit five of their last six shots from the floor in the opening quarter to take a 21-13 lead after one.
The Wolverines allowed just five points to Weber State in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 15-5. UVU didn't allow WSU to score for over five minutes in the second, and by then had cut the deficit to two, 21-19. Down 26-23,
Sophia Jacobsson hit a jumper to get the Wolverines within one before
Gabrielle Leos knocked down a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left. The three gave UVU its first lead of the game and a 28-26 advantage at the break.
Out of the half, Utah Valley got buckets from Grange and Holland to take a 32-26 lead before Weber State scored six straight to knot it at 32-32. UVU led 39-38 when Braslis hit a jumper and then scored on a put-back for a 43-38 Wolverine lead. Pentzer hit a 3-pointer right in the closing seconds of the quarter for the Wildcats and UVU led 45-43 after three.
The Wolverines next host UC Riverside on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT in the UCCU Center in the final game before a short Christmas break. UVU will wrap up non-conference play at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Dec. 29.
