FULLERTON, Calif. – Jordan Holland scored all 21 of her points in the second half but a late 3-pointer by Amiee Book helped Cal State Fullerton edge Utah Valley University, 56-55, on Saturday afternoon at Titan Gymnasium.
Holland hit a jumper to give the Wolverines (6-7) a 52-51 lead with 2:56 to go and after she hit a free throw,
Maria Carvalho hit a turnaround bucket to give Utah Valley led 55-51 with under two minutes left.
Carolyn Gill got the Titans (8-5) within two on a jumper before Book's three with 14.2 left on the clock went as the game-winner. Before the make, the Fullerton was just 1-for-16 from beyond the arc. The Titans used three key offensive rebounds in the waning moments of the game with each of their last two field goals coming on second-chance points. The final offensive board came with just under five seconds left on a missed free throw, sealing the game.
"We showed some growth and controlled the tempo of the game for the most part but we didn't get the stops we needed and had some unfortunate breaks at the end," said UVU head coach
Cathy Nixon. "I told the girls in the locker room that I know this game and experience will come back to our betterment in the long run. Preseason is about learning and getting better and we'll be able to process this and use the experience down the road."
Holland was scoreless after taking just three shots in the first half before hitting all seven of her attempts from the field and hitting 5-for-7 from the free-throw line in the final 20 minutes. She also finished with four steals.
Eve Braslis finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while
Alexis Cortez added nine with Carvalho dishing out five assists. Gill led Fullerton with 16 points and nine rebounds, Book scored 12 and Daeja Smith finished with 10 points and nine boards.
UVU led 6-2 early on after Braslis hit her second bucket before the Titans went on a 13-2 run to take a 15-8 lead late in the first quarter. Cortez hit a shot in the final minute to get Utah Valley within five after one.
The Wolverines scored the first six points of the second quarter, with a Cortez jumper giving eight straight points overall and a 16-15 lead.

The game was tied at 25-25 when Holland knocked down a pair from the line and later converted a 3-point play on a driving layup and free throw to give the Wolverines their biggest lead, 30-25. Fullerton tied the game at 31-31, one of five ties in the quarter, which ended at 39-all after three. Holland scored 11 in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth.
After scoring four straight to end the third, the Titans extended their run to 8-0 to take a 43-39 lead early in the fourth. Braslis scored down low to make it 43-41 before Holland knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Wolverines a 44-43 lead.
Two free throws put Fullerton in front with 4:07 left before Carvalho got into the paint and found Braslis for an easy two as the game continued to seesaw back-and-forth. Smith answered with a putback on the other end before Holland's baseline jumper made it 52-51. The lead changed hands seven times in the fourth quarter alone and 11 times in the game.
Saturday's contest was the final non-conference of the year for Utah Valley. The Wolverines begin WAC play next Thursday against Grand Canyon at 6 p.m. MT in the UCCU Center. CSU Bakersfield comes to Orem for a Saturday afternoon match up at 3 p.m. in Lockhart Arena.
