OREM, Utah – Despite a furious fourth-quarter push, Utah Valley women's basketball's late comeback fell short in an 84-74 setback to Chicago State on Saturday afternoon inside Lockhart Arena.
The Wolverines (9-14, 3-5 WAC) clawed their way back from a 20-point deficit in the fourth-quarter with a 32-15 run to pull to within five in the final minute. However, the Cougars (1-23, 1-7 WAC) went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in crunch time to provide a cushion against UVU's fourth-quarter surge and hang on for the win.
Senior guard
Mariah Seals led all Utah Valley scorer's with 21 points and added eight assists for the second straight game. In addition, Seals pushed the pace in the final minutes of the contest to finish with 11 points in the fourth quarter.
The Wolverines also received double-digit scoring efforts from sophomore
Jordan Holland with 12 points, as well as 10 points apiece from sophomores
Leya Harvey and
Alexis Cortez. UVU's combined offensive efforts, however, weren't enough to overcome the 12 three-pointers that the Cougars hit in the contest.
In the contest, senior guard
Taylor Christensen became the seventh Wolverine in UVU's Division I era to surpass 1,000 career points. Needing only six points to reach that mark to begin the day, Christensen finished with eight points and racked up four steals against Chicago State.
Christensen joins former Wolverines Robyn Fairbanks, Julie Smith, Sandy Wall, Sammie Jensen and Jenna Johnson and her current teammate Seals on the squad's Division I list of 1,000-point scorers.
Utah Valley will cap its three-game homestand with a matchup versus UMKC on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT inside Lockhart Arena.
