KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Utah Valley University starters
Addie Jensen and
Makayla Shadle pitched a pair of complete-game gems en route to leading the Wolverines to a doubleheader sweep over WAC foe UMKC, 10-2 and 7-1, on a windy Friday afternoon in Kansas City.
Â
Jensen gave up just three hits and one earned run (two total) on her way to earning the five-inning complete-game victory in game one, and Shadle followed by allowing just one unearned run on two hits in a seven-inning complete-game outing in game number two to help UVU (12-22, 4-3 WAC) record the conference doubleheader sweep over Kansas City (10-30, 0-8 WAC).
Â
True freshman
Peyton Angulo led the way for the Wolverines at the plate on the day by going 4-for-7 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored, while
Skylar Cook went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two runs batted in, and
Lyndsay Steverson posted a 3-for-7 day with a double and three RBIs.
Â
"We came to the ballpark prepared to dominate the day. We knew we needed these two games and we are very pleased to have swept the doubleheader," senior first baseman
Taleigh Williams said. "We got timely hits, had solid pitching and made clutch plays to win the day. Now we just need to win on Saturday to finish off the sweep."
Â
GAME ONE
After getting shut out against neighboring foe BYU earlier in the week, the UVU offense didn't waste any time getting things going against UMKC in the opener by pushing across eight first-inning runs to jump out to a 8-0 lead. Following a leadoff walk from
Brianna Moeller and an infield single from Cook, Angulo drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to left to make it 1-0.
Basia Query then followed with an RBI single to left to make it 2-0, and
Madison Sisco delivered the big blow with a three-run homer over the left field fence to give the Wolverines a 5-0 advantage. The sixth run then came in on a double steal from
Kirsten Andersen and
Abbie Tuttle,
Skylar Cook later drove in Andersen with an RBI infield single, and
Brianna Moeller capped the scoring by coming in on a UMKC throwing error to wrap the eight-run inning.
Â
The game remained 8-0 until the fourth when the Wolverines managed to tack on two more runs to extend their lead to 10-0. Angulo started the rally with a one-out single and later advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Pinch runner
Linnah Rebolledo then came around to score on a Query RBI single to make it 9-0. Following a two-out walk by Sisco,
Kaylee Bott doubled pinch-runner
Kiara Kennedy home for UVU's 10th run of the ballgame.
Â
The Kangaroos then got their first run of the game back in the last of the fourth thanks to a Wolverine defensive miscue to make it 10-1. The Roos then tacked on another late run in the bottom of the fifth on a double steal attempt, but UVU's Jensen managed to strike out the very next batter to end the ballgame via the eight-run rule. Â
Â
Jensen went the distance in the circle for the Wolverines in the ballgame to improve to 7-9 overall. She gave up just three hits and one earned run (two total) while striking out five and walking just one. UMKC's Sara Miller (1-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs in a third of an inning.
Â
A trio of the Wolverines finished with two hits apiece in the contest in Cook, Angulo and Query. Cook and Angulo both went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Query went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. Sisco, who belted out a three-run home run in the first, is now UVU's team leader in round trippers on the season with five.
Â
GAME TWO
Kansas City then bounced back early in game number two by pushing across a first-inning run to jump out to a 1-0 advantage. Ashlyn O'Brien reached on an error and Sydney Garcia came around to score the unearned run to give UMKC the early lead.
Â
Still 1-0 Roos in the third, UVU responded with three runs of its own to take a 3-1 lead. Tuttle started the rally with a leadoff single and later came in to score on an RBI single from Cook to tie the game at 1-1. With Cook and Moeller later leading from second and third, Steverson delivered a two-out two-run double to left center to give the Wolverines the lead.
Â
Utah Valley then managed to tack on another run in the fourth to extend its lead to 4-1. After Sisco reached via a walk and Tuttle reached on a single, pinch runner
Karly Bunderson scored on a double steal to give the Wolverines the three-run lead.
Â
The Kangaroos then threatened in the last of the fourth by loading the bases with just one away, but UVU's Shadle responded by retiring the next two batters she faced to escape the jam unscathed.
Â
The contest remained 4-1 until the seventh when the Wolverines managed to tack on a trio of insurance runs to extend their lead to 7-1.
Eryn Sustayta, Andersen and pinch-hitter
Taleigh Williams loaded the bases for UVU with just one away in the frame by reaching on a respective walk, single and hit batter. Angulo then delivered the big hit with a two-run single and Steverson capped the scoring with an RBI single of her own to give Utah Valley the 7-1 advantage.
Â
UMKC then got a one-out hit from Garcia in the last of the seventh, but Shadle completed her complete-game gem by striking out both Ashlyn O'Brien and Morgan Byrn back-to-back to end the game.
Â
Shadle gave up just two hits and one unearned run while striking out four and walking four to earn the complete-game victory. The Wolverine senior improves to 3-7 on the year with the win. UMKC's Lynsey Conner drops to 5-13 after allowing seven runs in 6.1 innings of work.
Â
Steverson led the Wolverines at the plate in the game by going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in, while Tuttle posted a perfect 2-for-2 outing with a run scored and a stolen base.
Â
"I am so proud of our team, today every single girl had an opportunity to execute and we really came together and played for each other and with one another. After a hard week at practice we came out and really capitalized in those areas," said senior utility
Sydney Cluff. "The doubleheader sweep puts us in a great position to come out and try to hammer in the nail on Saturday."
