UTAH VALLEY SOFTBALL HOSTS BYU TUESDAY FOR UCCU CROSSTOWN CLASH
OREM, Utah – Fresh off of a split over preseason WAC favorite Grand Canyon over the weekend, the Utah Valley University will close its five-game homestand by hosting neighboring rival BYU for a UCCU Crosstown Clash on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The in-state rivalry game will begin at 3 p.m. at UVU's Wolverine Softball Field and will feature free admission. The contest will also be streamed live on the
WAC Digital Network and will feature live stats by visiting
UVUStats.com.
Â
Utah Valley will enter Tuesday's UCCU Crosstown Clash with a 10-21 overall record and tied for third in the WAC standings with a 2-3 league mark. After dropping both games of a midweek non-conference doubleheader to Mountain West foe Boise State at home on April 4, UVU responded by splitting the weekend league series against the defending WAC champion GCU Lopes.
Â
Behind a complete-game outing from junior right-hander
Addie Jensen, the Wolverines took game one, 5-3, before falling in the nightcap of the twin bill by a score of 4-1. The two clubs then had the series finale washed out on Saturday due to rain to shorten the series to a two-game affair.
Â
The victory over GCU marked UVU's first win in program history over the defending WAC champion Lopes. Jensen went the distance in the circle in Utah Valley's 5-3 win over Grand Canyon, while sophomore second baseman
Lyndsay Steverson went 3-for-4 with a run scored at the plate. Junior third baseman
Kaylee Bott too played well in the ballgame by going 1-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Â
In four games last week, Steverson led the Wolverines by hitting .571 with two home runs and six runs batted in. Junior
Brianna Moeller was next by hitting .385 on the week with a double, a run batted in and three runs scored. Jensen led UVU in the circle by going 1-0 in three appearances with a 4.04 ERA.
Â
Freshman
Peyton Angulo leads the Wolverines on the season by hitting .384 with nine doubles, three home runs and 16 RBIs. Moeller is next with a .367 average, while Steverson leads UVU in the power numbers with four homers and 21 RBIs. Jensen paces the Utah Valley pitching staff with a 6-8 record and a 3.02 ERA.
Â
Tuesday's UCCU Crosstown Clash will mark the first of two season meetings between UVU and BYU. The two will again meet up on May 1 at BYU's Gail Miller Field.
Â
ABOUT BYU
The Cougars will head to Orem with a 21-18 overall record and a 3-0 start in West Coast Conference play. BYU went a perfect 4-0 last week with a midweek win over in-state foe Utah State in Logan, before opening conference play with a three-game sweep over Santa Clara at home. Brigham Young was once again picked to win the WCC this season after having won a conference championship in each of the past nine seasons. The Cougars have also made 13 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
Â
Libby Sugg leads BYU at the plate on the season with a .390 average, nine homers and 42 RBIs. Sugg, who was tabbed the WCC Hitter of the Week on Monday, was selected to the USA Softball College Player of the Year Watch List prior to the season after earning first team NFCA All-Region honors last year. Kerisa Viramontes paces the Cougar pitching staff with a 9-6 record and a 2.30 ERA.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST BYU
Tuesday's contest will mark the 41st all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Cougars. BYU will enter play holding to a 36-4 series lead and having won six straight meetings. UVU's last win came on March 21, 2015 in Provo when former Utah Valley pitcher Bailey Moore no-hit the Cougars en route to earning a 13-0 victory.
Â
ON DECK FOR UTAH VALLEY
The Wolverines will hit the road to return to conference play with a three-game series at UMKC this weekend. UVU and Kanas City will play a pair of games on Friday, April 13 at 12 and 2 p.m. MT, before closing the series with a single game on Saturday, April 14 at noon MT.
