LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Utah Valley University softball saw its postseason run end following a 7-5 loss against Nevada on the second day of the National Invitational Softball Championship at UNLV on Thursday.
The postseason appearance was the second for the Wolverines (21-31) during the program's NCAA Division I era following their second-place finish during the WAC regular season. It's the first postseason appearance under second-year head coach
TJ Hubbard.
"This was a great experience for our kids and great exposure for our program moving forward," Hubbard said. "This group earned the right to be here and I am proud of the work they did all season long. I am especially thankful for the contributions this senior class provided. Not only this year but their entire careers at UVU."
Skylar Cook, who finished 3-for-4 on Thursday, was named to the All-Tournament Team along with
Basia Query, who was 2-for-3 with a walk. Cook scored two runs and added her third stolen base of the tournament, capping her season a perfect 28-for-28.
Trailing 7-3 entering the final inning, Cook reached on her third hit before
Lyndsay Steverson lined her 11th home run of the season over the wall in left-center, making it a 7-5 game. Query followed with a base hit but was stranded to end the game.
The Wolf Pack (28-26) took a quick 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run home run from Erika Hansen before
Peyton Angulo tied it in the third with a two-out, two-run single to left. With
Brianna Moeller at second with two down, Cook singled and then moved up to second on the throw to the plate, leaving runners at second and third. Angulo then lofted one just inside the line in left, scoring both runners.
Nevada answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Kwynn Warner and Haley Burda both had two-run singles in the inning, giving the Wolf Pack a 6-2 lead after three.
Steverson doubled to lead off the fourth before Query worked a 10-pitch plate appearance into a walk, putting two on with nobody out.
Kaylee Bott sacrificed both runners up before an error allowed pinch runner Kirsten Anderson to score to make it 6-3.
Nevada also took advantage of an error in the bottom of the fourth to add another run and extend the lead back to four runs, 7-3.
