SALT LAKE CITY—The Utah Valley University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Big 12 foe Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at Ute Soccer Field in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Â
The game was relocated to Salt Lake City because of the poor air quality in Utah County due to the fires. UVU falls to 1-8-1 overall with the setback, while Oklahoma improves to 3-4-1.
Â
"We ran out of gas and I think we left everything we had left out on the field and unfortunately it wasn't enough to finish," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "We had a couple of good chances but we couldn't find the back of the net."
Â
Oklahoma scored the game winner in the 43rd minute after Kaylee Dao passed it out to Paige Thompson who then sent a pass into the box to Marissa McMahand, who then headed it into the lower left side of the goal.
Â
The Sooners out-shot UVU 15-4 on the day, including a 9-1 advantage on frame. OU had five corner kicks to UVU's 3.
Sadie Brockbank led the Wolverines with two shots on the day.
Brianna Hatch and
Laken Flinders each tallied one shot. Hatch registered UVU's lone shot on goal. UVU keeper
Brooklyn Nielsen had a season-high eight saves on the day with the one goal allowed.
Â
"We're excited about having the next couple of days off to recover," said Lemay. "After the rest, we will get back at it and will have a good week of preparation for a big crosstown rival game at BYU."
Â
Next up for the Wolverines is a UCCU Crosstown Clash meeting at BYU on Sept. 21 in Provo. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be a final tune up before UVU begins WAC play on Sept. 28 at New Mexico State.
