NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Utah Valley University dropped its first match of the 2018 season after a flurry of second-half goals gave CSUN a 6-1 decision.
The Wolverines (3-1-0) got a
Zach Maas goal, his third of the season, in the 50th minute. That goal briefly tied the game at 1-1, but the Matadors (3-1-0) answered less than two minutes later with the game-winner.
"Soccer can be cruel, and today, full credit to CSUN as they took advantage of each of our mistakes. We're a young group, eager to learn, but today we learned some tough lessons that each of us took to heart," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Our start to the second half was fantastic. We earned a great equalizer, but quickly found ourselves chasing the game again. We'll get back to the training grounds, and I'm confident our team's response will be nothing short of professional as we prepare for another tough road trip to Omaha."
Maas' goal came on a play started by
Austin Buxton, who played the ball to
Luis Garza at the left corner of the 18. Garza slipped it to
Luis Vargas, who beat the keeper to the ball and found Maas right in front of the goalmouth. Both Garza and Vargas earned assists on the goal.
Daniel Trejo, who had a hat trick for CSUN, scored the game-winning goal after Maas' equalizer, and then added two more in minutes 63 and 64. The Matadors scored five times in the second half.
The Wolverines will head back out on the road next weekend with contests at Omaha on Friday and against Memphis on Sunday in a match that will be played at Creighton.
