UVU drops 3-1 decision at UT Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, Texas—Utah Valley took an early lead but couldn't hold on as UT Rio Grande Valley scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Wolverines 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the UTRGV Athletic Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

"UTRGV scored all three of its goals on well-struck set pieces and so we need to do a better job of being disciplined around the goal," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. "We won't hang our heads on this loss. We'll take note of some things we need to work on and get ready for Chicago State at home on Friday morning."

Utah Valley (2-10-1, 1-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute as Breanna McCarter dribbled past a UTRGV defender down the right side of the field and sent a cross into the box. Whitney Paskins was on the receiving end and kicked the ball in with her left foot for her team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the Wolverines the 1-0 advantage. McCarter was credited with the assist—her second of the season.

UT Rio Grande Valley (7-4-1, 1-1-0) found the back of the net with just 38 seconds remaining in the first half as Lea Kalmbach scored on a free kick from about 22 yards out to send the game into the break tied, 1-1.

UTRGV's Emily Zapata scored the game winner in the 65th minute as she scored on a free kick from just 20 yards out at the top left of the box. The Vaqueros then secured the match with a penalty kick goal in the 77th minute by Sarah Bonney.

UTRGV out-shot UVU 20-15 on the day, including a 9-4 advantage on frame. UVU earned four corner kicks to UTRGV's two. Paskins led the Wolverines with five shots, including two on goal. Sadie Brockbank and McCarter each had three shots with one on net. Brooklyn Nielsen played all 90 minutes in the box, collecting six saves.

Utah Valley now returns home to take on Chicago State on Friday, Oct. 5. Kickoff at Clyde Field is set for 11 a.m. (MT).
