Utah Valley coasts to 74-60 road win over Cougars

CHICAGO, Ill.– Jake Toolson led six Wolverines in double figures with 16 points as Utah Valley defeated Chicago State on the road, 74-60, to improve to 15-7 on the year and 4-3 in WAC play. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 3-18 and 0-6 in conference play.

"I'm so proud of our guys. This is our first time to be above water in conference play and its hard to win on the road," said Utah Valley head coach Mark Pope. "We needed to come out here and get these two wins on the road and it puts us in a really good position and makes Wednesday's game huge."

Chicago State jumped out to a 6-3 lead over the first six minutes of the game and both teams went back and forth as UVU held a 16-15 edge with 5:53 to go in the opening half. The Wolverines finished the half on a 17-6 burst to take a 33-21 lead into the half. The Cougars would cut the lead down to six with 16:56 to go in the game, but UVU responded with a 10-0 run to push the game out of reach and coast to the 74-60 win.

Utah Valley shot 45.5 percent for the game and outrebounded Chicago State 38-24. The Wolverines converted 13 offensive rebounds in 16 second chance points as they led the game for almost 32 minutes. Steele finished with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead the Wolverines. Jake Toolson finished with 16 points and Wyatt Lowell chipped in 11 points. TJ Washington, Ben Nakwaasah, Richard Harward joined them in double figures with 10 points each, respectively.

Utah Valley head home to host Cal Baptist in the UCCU Center in the first-ever matchup between the two schools. Tip is set for Jan. 30 at 7:00pm MT.
