UVU hosts WAC newcomer California Baptist on Wednesday

UVU HOSTS WAC NEWCOMER CALIFORNIA BAPTIST ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT UCCU CENTER
  • After sweeping a pair of games on the road last week, Utah Valley returns to the UCCU Center to take on WAC newcomer California Baptist on Wednesday night in a first-ever meeting between the two schools. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (MST)
     
  • The Wolverines picked up their first conference road wins of the season after a two-game road sweep of Kansas City and Chicago State. UVU downed UMKC 75-67 before defeating Chicago State, 74-60. Jake Toolson led six Wolverines in double figures with 16 points to lift the Wolverines to the win at Chicago State. Steele finished with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Wyatt Lowell chipped in 11 points. TJ Washington, Ben Nakwaasah, Richard Harward joined them in double figures with 10 points each, respectively.
     
  • Jake Toolson tied the UVU record for consecutive free throws made as he successfully made his 41st straight shot from the charity stripe against New Mexico State on Jan. 19. He tied Holton Hunsaker's streak of 41 set during the 2011-12 season. Toolson then missed what would have been his 42nd straight free throw as he finished the NM State game with a 2-of-3 clip at the charity stripe. Toolson leads the WAC with an 88.9 percent mark (56-of-63) from the free throw line this season. He ranks 23rd nationally at the line. He has knocked down 55 of his last 59 free throws.
     
  • Jake Toolson leads Utah Valley in scoring at 16.5 points per game, followed closely behind by Conner Toolson at 13.2 points a contest. The Toolson duo has scored nearly 40 percent of UVU's points this season. Jake has been impressive from the floor, shooting 58.0 percent (127-of-219), including a team-best 46.4 percent (39-of-84) clip from three-point range. He also leads UVU with an 87.5 percent (70-of-80) clip from the free throw line. Baylee Steele leads UVU on the boards, pulling down 6.7 rebounds a game, while TJ Washington leads the team in assists at 4.0 a game.
     
  • Utah Valley ranks in the top-50 in four statistical team categories and three individual categories. The Wolverines rank 17th in field goal percentage (49.1), 19th in free throws made (353), 24th in free throw attempts (490), and 43rd in three-point field goal percentage (37.7). Jake Toolson individually ranks in the top-50 in three categories. Toolson ranks 29th nationally in free throw percentage (87.5), 35th in field goal percentage (58.6), and 42nd in total minutes (741:31). According to KenPom.com, Toolson ranks second in the nation in true shooting percentage (71.7) and 11th nationally in effective field goal percentage (67.2). 
BROADCAST INFORMATION
Wednesday's game against California Baptist will be broadcast live on the WAC Digital Network. UVU has also entered into a new partnership with KSLtv. The KSLtv app will be streaming all home UVU men's basketball games live. The game will also be streamed live through the GoUVU YouTube channel, and on the GoUVU Facebook page. Brandon Crow and Holton Hunsaker will be on the call. The game will also be broadcast over the radio waves as Jim McCulloch enters his ninth season as the Voice of the Wolverines. Josh Kallunki will be handling the color commentary duties on the radio. The radio broadcast will be aired live on ESPN 960AM radio. A live stream of the radio broadcast will also be available at ESPN960Sports.com.

UVU PARTNERS WITH UVU LATINO INITIATIVE TO HOST LATINO NIGHT AT WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S GAME
The Utah Valley University basketball team is proud to partner with the UVU Latino Initiative to host the first Latino Night at the team's game against California Baptist on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the UCCU Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (MST) The Latino Night festivities will include cultural performances prior to the game and during halftime. A mariachi band will be performing prior to the game at the southeast entrance of the UCCU Center.  Los Wolverines t-shirts will be thrown out to the crowd during the game. The Latino Initiative is expecting more than 1,900 guests in attendance. The Latino Initiative aims to increase educational and career opportunities for Latino students and their families in their local communities. By networking with community partners, engaging parents and students along the PK-16 educational pathway, and providing culturally sensitive and relevant educational information, UVU is committed to improving services and informing policy decisions concerning access to higher education for the Latino population. The Latino student enrollment at UVU for fall 2019 is at 4,576 or 11.5 percent of the student body population.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
California Baptist enters Wednesday's contest with a 10-9 overall record and a 2-4 record in WAC play. CBU is in its first season as a Division I member after moving up from the Division II ranks and becoming a member of the WAC. After cruising through a 7-1 record from Nov. 29 to Jan. 3 with its only loss coming to Big West favorite UC Irvine, the Lancers have recently dropped four of its last five games including a pair of home losses last week to CSU Bakersfield and Grand Canyon. The Lancers have the WAC's leading scorer in Milan Acquaah, a transfer from Washington State. The sophomore is averaging 21.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. His 21.4 points a game ranks him 22nd nationally. As a team, CBU is averaging 80.5 points per game while limiting opponents to a 75.7 points per game average. The Lancers like to shoot the long ball as the team is one of only 27 teams in the country attempting an average of 26 or more three pointers per game while shooting 35 percent or better from beyond the arc.

SERIES HISTORY VS. CBU
Utah Valley and California Baptist meet up on the basketball hardwood for the first time in the two team's history on Wednesday night. The two teams will meet again on March 2 in Riverside.

WOLVERINES COMPLETE ROAD SWEEP WITH 74-60 WIN AT CHICAGO STATE
Jake Toolson led six Wolverines in double figures with 16 points as Utah Valley defeated Chicago State on the road, 74-60, to improve to 15-7 on the year and 4-3 in WAC play. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 3-18 and 0-6 in conference play.

Chicago State jumped out to a 6-3 lead over the first six minutes of the game and both teams went back and forth as UVU held a 16-15 edge with 5:53 to go in the opening half. The Wolverines finished the half on a 17-6 burst to take a 33-21 lead into the half. The Cougars would cut the lead down to six with 16:56 to go in the game, but UVU responded with a 10-0 run to push the game out of reach and coast to the 74-60 win.  
 
Utah Valley shot 45.5 percent for the game and outrebounded Chicago State 38-24. The Wolverines converted 13 offensive rebounds in 16 second chance points as they led the game for almost 32 minutes. Steele finished with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead the Wolverines. Jake Toolson finished with 16 points and Wyatt Lowell chipped in 11 points. TJ Washington, Ben Nakwaasah, Richard Harward joined them in double figures with 10 points each, respectively.

Utah Valley completed a WAC road sweep with the win at Chicago State as the team defeated UMKC, 75-67, on Jan. 24 in Kansas City.
