Wolverines drop first contest of two-game trip

SAN JOSÉ, Calif. – Utah Valley University dropped the first match of a two-game trip in Western Athletic Conference soccer, 3-0, at San José State on Friday night in the Bay Area.

The Wolverines (8-5-1, 5-2-0) will now travel to face WAC-leading Seattle U on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT.

The Spartans (3-10-1, 3-3-1) got an early 10th-minute goal -- after UVU had a goal called back on an offside call minutes earlier -- before two quick strikes in less than two minutes put the game away late in the match.

The first goal came on an unusual play, when a Finlay Wood pass into the box found the head of Jeff Dukes and simultaneously the center official's whistle can be heard for a potential offside call. Dukes' header found the back of the net, but play had seemingly stopped. After conferring with the assistant referee, the center award the goal to SJSU.

"Take nothing away from San José State, but It's hard to explain the circumstances surrounding tonight's match in the first half. We had a great goal called back, and one against us that defied logic," UVU head coach Greg Maas said. "At the end of it all, we lost the match, and our focus has already moved forward to Seattle on Sunday."

The score remained one-nil until a foul was awarded right at the edge of the 18 and Rudy Castro scored over the wall and into the upper right 90. Castro added his second goal in less than two minutes on an Omar Lemus pass to pick up the brace. David Sweeny had 11 saves in earning the shutout as Utah Valley got off 18 shots, 11 on goal. Six of the Spartans' eight shots were on frame.

Sunday's opponent, Seattle U, won 2-1 over Air Force to extend its lead atop the WAC table. The Redhawks had 19 points, four in front of the second-place Wolverines.
