BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Utah Valley volleyball team marked the first conference sweep of the season over CSU Bakersfield in a night cap on Thursday, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22).
UVU posted a 4-0 run in the opening set over CSUB to take and control the lead all through set one. Kills from
Bailey Christensen and
Megan Childs expanded the Wolverine lead with another string of points, 15-6.
Kazna Tarawhiti tallied five kills in the set, with three of them tagged on at the end of the set to finish over CSUB, 25-22.
The Wolverines began set two with the lead and would again maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the contest on a 5-2 start. UVU pulled together a pair of three-point runs to lengthen the gap between the teams at 17-12. A final kill from Tarawhiti would capture the second victory of the night at 25-22. Tarawhiti posted four kills in the second set while Christensen also added three.
The final set of the night cap was a point-for-point battle that produced six lead changes in the 47-point contest. Tied at 14-14, the Wolverines pulled away in a four-point run as Tarawhiti collected two aces and a kill to a 17-14 lead. A final four-nothing post from UVU would finalize the set for the green and white, 25-22.
Jasmine Niutupuivaha marked three kills alongside Tarawhiti with four more kills to finish the set.
Tarawhiti led the Wolverines with 14 kills to post a .367% average, followed by Christensen with 8 for a .438% average.
Makaila Jarema, Childs and Niutupuivaha all added a pair of blocks as the Wolverines out-blocked the Roadrunners, 6-3.
Utah Valley now travels to Phoenix, Arizona to take on the Lopes of Grand Canyon on October 5 at 4pm MT.
