Frischknecht sets school record in 3-1 win over UNLV

OREM, Utah – Blake Frischknecht set a new single-season goal record as Utah Valley University cemented its spot in the WAC Tournament with a 3-1 win over UNLV on Thursday night at Clyde Field.

Frishknecht's goal was his 10th of his senior year, and moved him past Skyler Milne and Paul Hoffmeister in the program record book. Zach Maas scored the game-winning goal and also added an assist and Luis Garza got in the goal column for the Wolverines (9-6-1, 6-3-0).

"I was very proud of our response tonight. We were efficient in possession, scored some fantastic team goals, and we were locked in defensively." UVU head coach Greg Maas said. "With the WAC tournament only a week or so away, momentum is everything, and there are a lot of positives to take away from tonight's result against UNLV on Clyde Field."

Utah Valley took an early lead when Maas hit Brown and Brown fed Garza, who scored into the lower right corner less than five minutes into the contest. The assists for Maas and Brown were the fourth and fifth, respectively, for the two juniors.

Maas gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead late in the first half, in the game's 40th minute. Leo Fuchs took a deep pass from Ahmed Longmire, eluded a pair of defenders and found Maas, whose one-timer from the top of the 18 found the lower left corner for his second goal in as many games and his fourth of the season.

Timo Mehlich scored for UNLV in the 58th minute on a free kick just outside the 18. The goal was Mehlich's 10th of the year and gave him a brief lead in the conference race for goals scored before Frischknecht's put the game away in the 83rd minute to join Mehlich as the WAC leaders in goals scored.

Mitch Jensen delivered a free kick from the far end of the field that Frischknecht tracked and, after the defender couldn't get a strong enough touch, took it out of the air on the bounce and scored over the head of the keeper.

The Wolverines continue their homestand with Grand Canyon on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Clyde Field. The Lopes lost in double-overtime, 4-3, at Air Force on Thursday night.
