UVU drops overtime heartbreaker in WAC title match

SEATTLE—Seattle U scored an overtime golden goal in the 99th minute to defeat Utah Valley, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in the championship match of the WAC Tournament at Championship Field in Seattle, Wash.

With the loss, Utah Valley ends its season with an 11-9-1 overall record and a third place finish in the WAC with a 5-3-0 mark.

Amber Tripp gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute after she beat a defender at the top of the box and then fired a shot with her left foot to the right upper 90 for the score. The goal marks Tripp's eighth goal of the season. She also had a goal in UVU's semifinal win over Kansas City. Breanna DeWaal and Madeline Moore were each credited with an assist on the goal.

UVU nearly had the match when the Redhawks sent a free kick from the right side into the box with just four minutes remaining in regulation. There was a scrum in the box and SU's Leahi Manthei punched the ball into the net for the equalizer and to force the game into overtime.

With just over a minute remaining in the first overtime period, Seattle U's Jessie Ray received the ball near the top of the box and kicked it on the bounce into the left side of the net for the golden goal winner.

Julianna Carter and Sadie Brockbank led UVU with two shots apiece. Tripp, Brockbank, and Cassidy McCormick had UVU's three shots on goal. Allie Jara led the Wolverines with four saves on the day.

Utah Valley finishes its season with 10 or more wins for the fifth time over the past six seasons. The team has played in three of the last five WAC Tournament championship matches.

Katie Haskins, Jocelyn Bybee, and Tripp were named to the WAC All-Tournament team for their play over the two matches at the tournament.
