COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Utah Valley University saw its season come to a heartbreaking end, falling on penalty kicks to Seattle University in the WAC Men's Soccer Tournament Championship on Sunday at the Air Force Academy.
After 110 minutes and the teams tied at 1-1, the Wolverines (12-6-3) were forced to PKs for the second match in a row. The Redhawks (14-3-4) got a trio of huge saves from goalkeeper Akili Kasim to win the penalties, 2-1, and earn the WAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
Mitch Jensen came up with nine saves in the match and only allowed one in 310 minutes in goal during the tournament. Jensen was named to the All-Tournament Team along with
Alec Felix and
Ahmed Longmire.
"As we expected, today was an epic battle for the WAC championship between two great sides. I honestly couldn't be more proud of our response having been our third match in five days, dealing with significant injuries, this team dug deep and the quality of our depth was challenged and we responded," UVU head coach Greg Maas said. "We had a remarkable season on so many levels. Our seven seniors were incredible leaders, teammates, and have opened doors for our rising players to reach even greater heights. I love this team, and I'm lucky to be their coach — it was a season I'll cherish forever."
In Sunday's finale, the Wolverines got into the scoring column first on a free kick with 11 minutes to go in the half. Zach Maas' free kick found Caleb Wight, whose header in front of the goal mouth was headed off the crossbar and in by Felix.
Seattle got the equalizer late in the first half when Felix and Julian Avila-Good converged on a 50/50 ball that Avila-Good was able to deflect into the back of the net in 43rd minute.
Jensen had five of his saves in the first half and came up with three more in the second to help force the overtimes. Wight nearly gave UVU the lead in the 80th minute when his strike from distance slammed the top of the woodwork.
The Wolverines were without WAC Offensive Player of the Year in senior
Blake Frischknecht for the second match in a row after he went down with an injury in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Kansas City. UVU was also without another senior,
Luis Vargas, who was injured in the 4-1 win over Air Force on Senior Day.
