RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Utah Valley University fell behind early to a hot-shooting UC Riverside squad and couldn't recover, falling 67-53 on Thursday night at SRC Arena.
The Highlanders (2-4) went 9-for-11 from the floor in the opening quarter, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and led 23-11 despite turning the ball over seven times in the game's first 10 minutes.
Eve Braslis led the Wolverines (0-4) with 16 points while
Josie Williams added 10 and
Megan Jensen chipped in eight. Keilanei Cooper and Jannon Otto combined to score 43 points for UC Riverside, with 22 and 21 points, respectively. Cooper went 8-for-11 from the field including 5-for-7 from three while Otto finished 9-for-13 and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Utah Valley struggled from the field throughout the contest, hitting just 28.3% while the Highlanders hit 46.6% overall. The Wolverines made just one 3-pointer, on 19 attempts, with UC Riverside going 9-for-21 from three.
The Wolverines were able to get to the line 28 times, compared to 11 for the Highlanders, and UVU won the rebounding battle, 42-40. Utah Valley also forced 25 UCR turnovers with
Maria Carvalho coming up with five steals.
UVU will play at Boise State on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. MT. The Broncos will play at No. 8/9 Louisville on Sunday afternoon.
