OGDEN, Utah – Eve Braslis scored a career-high 23 points but Utah Valley University couldn't overcome its early struggles from the field and Weber State University pulled away late en route to a 72-46 final at the Dee Events Center.
The Wolverines (1-9) suffered through a stretch of nine straight misses from the field in the opening quarter, allowing the Wildcats (2-6) to go on an early 13-0 run to take control of the contest.
UVU scored five straight – all from
Jordan Holland -- to end the opening quarter. Holland hit two free throws and, following a steal by
Maria Carvalho, a corner three as the clock ticked down to end the opening frame.
The run extended to 8-0 early in the second when
Megan Jensen scored in the post to make it 19-14. The Wolverines were within four before the Wildcats got consecutive 3-pointers from Ula Chamberlin and Liz Graves to push the lead to 10, 33-23, to cap the scoring in the opening half.
Braslis scored 11 in the first half, nine of which came in the second quarter. Graves had 14 in the first half to lead the Wildcats, who shot 52% the opening 20 minutes, compared to just 25% by Utah Valley.
Braslis scored eight more in the third, getting all but four of UVU's points in the quarter. She scored with 3:22 left in the third to make it a 43-35 game, but the Wildcats finished the quarter on a 10-0 run to push the lead to 18 after three.
Graves led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, sharing game-high honors with Braslis. Both players were 10-for-14 from the floor.
Utah Valley closes out the pre-Christmas and in-state schedule on Saturday afternoon in the UCCU Center against Utah State at 2 p.m. MT.
