TJ Washington scored 18 points and
Trey Woodbury added 14 to lead Utah Valley in a 72-67 setback to Weber State on Wednesday night at the UCCU Center.
The win marks Weber State's first-ever win in Orem as the team was 0-5 all-time prior to Wednesday's victory. UVU falls to 4-6 overall, while WSU improves to 2-5 on the season.
Utah Valley jumped out to a quick 7-2 advantage though the first four minutes of the game. Weber State rallied right back to tie the game at 11-11 with 12:13 to go in the first half.
TJ Washington responded with back-to-back threes to spark a 12-4 UVU run to give the Wolverines a 23-15 lead with 4:52 to play. Weber State then bounced back with a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 24-23, with 2:44 remaining in the half. The Wolverines then closed the half with five unanswered points to take a 28-24 lead into the break.
The Wolverines scored six of the first eight points to open the second half to extend their lead to an eight-point 34-26 lead at the 16:20 mark. Weber State then outscored UVU 14-6 over the next five minutes to tie the game, 40-40, with 11:16 to play. The Wildcats then used an 11-4 run to take a 51-44 lead with 8:00 remaining. A Washington layup with 4:13 to play cut WSU's lead to just two points, 57-55. Weber State then edged the Wolverines 15-12 over the final 3:25 to hold on for the 72-67 win.
Washington scored his 18 points six shots from the field, including four shots from long range. He also dished out six assists and pulled down four rebounds. Woodbury knocked down 7-of-16 shots from the field for his 14 points.
Casdon Jardine was also in double figures with 10 points, while
Brandon Averette scored nine.
Emmanuel Olojakpoke pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds with eight points and six blocks. The six blocks ties him for fourth on the all-time UVU single game blocks list.
Utah Valley now heads back out on the road to take on Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon in Cedar City. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. (MT)
