LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Utah Valley University dropped a pair of two-run contests at the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic, falling 5-3 to Miami University (Ohio) and 2-0 to host UNLV.
Peyton Angulo continued to be a near-impossible out at the plate for the Wolverines (3-4). She was a combined 3-for-4 with two walks and through five games is 15-for-21 for a .714 average. Angulo, Monday's WAC Hitter of the Week, currently has a .769 on-base percentage.
Game 1 vs Miami (OH) – Utah Valley got a three-run home run from
Lyndsay Steverson but it was a two-run home run that helped Miami (OH) to a 5-3 win on Friday morning.
The Wolverines trailed 2-0 in the third when Steverson delivered her third home run of the year, to left-center, scoring
Brianna Moeller and Angulo.
The Redhawks (3-3) tied it on a sacrifice fly in the fifth before Lily Wilmont hit what turned out to be the game-winning home run.
Both teams got complete games from their starting pitchers;
Brylee Marziale (1-2) for UVU and Courtney Vierstra – who struck out 12 – for Miami.
Game 2 vs UNLV – UNLV scored twice in the bottom of the fifth for the game's only runs and Jenny Bressler pitched a shutout for the Rebels.
The Wolverines had opportunities to score, including in the first inning with the bases full and one out, but could not push a run across.
Angulo and Moeller each had doubles in the game for Utah Valley but were both stranded in scoring position. Moeller hit hers with two outs in the seventh before a foul out ended it.
Both
Devyn Cretz (2-1) and Jenny Bressler (4-0) tossed complete games for their respective teams.
The Wolverines will look to bounce back on Saturday morning in Henderson, Nevada, facing Georgetown at 9:00 a.m. MT followed by Fordham at 11:30 a.m. (MT). The games are being played at the Stephanie Lynn Craig Complex.
