OREM, Utah – Four players scored in double figures as Utah Valley University outlasted Seattle University, 63-56, on Saturday afternoon in the UCCU Center.
Alexis Cortez led the way with 15 points while
Jordan Holland finished with a double-double of 13 points and a career-high-tying 12 rebounds.
Maria Carvalho added 12 points and
Eve Braslis chipped in 10 for the Wolverines (12-10, 6-3) while
Madison Grange had three steals and Cortez blocked three shots, all of which came in the opening quarter. UVU limited Seattle U to just 29.9 percent (20-67) from the floor.
"I think we showed our personality tonight and it's that we're a balanced team. I thought we did a good job on the boards and it was a good defensive effort overall. That's what we have to do to be successful," said UVU head coach
Cathy Nixon. "It's a pleasure coaching these girls. They work really hard. They want to get better and they're really coming together at the right time."
Joana Alves led the Redhawks (1-21, 1-8) with 20 points and hit all eight of her attempts from the foul line, and Carla Bieg added 13.
Utah Valley trailed 14-9 with just under two minutes left in the opening quarter when Braslis scored on three straight possessions to give the Wolverines a 15-14 lead. Cortez collected her third block of the quarter on Seattle's next possession, but Genessa Bedoya found the loose ball and beat the buzzer for a 16-15 Seattle U lead after one.
Down one midway through the second, Grange intercepted a pass and found Carvahlo for a layup, starting six straight UVU points resulting in a 26-21 advantage. The Wolverines led 33-29 at the half.
Utah Valley stretched the lead to nine on a Carvalho jumper, but Seattle U got back within three late in the third. Grange collected another steal that resulted in a Carvalho layup in the final seconds of the third. Carvalho was also fouled and hit the free throw to give UVU a 47-41 lead after three.
Va'e Malufau hit back-to-back buckets in the post to start the fourth and give the Wolverines their biggest lead of the game, 51-41. The Redhawks would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
The win gives the Wolverines the regular season sweep of Seattle U and sets up a contest with league leader New Mexico State next Thursday at 11 a.m. MT in Lockhart Arena. UVU will also host UT Rio Grande Valley next Saturday at 3 p.m. also in Lockhart.
