UVU travels to the Golden State to take on CBU

UVU TRAVELS TO THE GOLDEN STATE TO TAKE ON CALIFORNIA BAPTIST ON SATURDAY NIGHT
Utah Valley heads out on its final regular season road trip of the season as the Wolverines travel to Riverside, California to take on WAC newcomer California Baptist on Saturday night at the CBU Events Center.

Jake Toolson dropped 25 points and Richard Harward added a double-double as Utah Valley knocked off Seattle U, 77-68, on Tuesday night at the Redhawk Center in Seattle. Toolson led all scorers with 25 points, adding five rebounds and a pair of threes. Harward finished with 14 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Conner Toolson added 11 points and Ben Nakwaasah dished a team-high five assists

Utah Valley won its 20th game of the season on Tuesday night against Seattle U. The 20-win season is the second-straight 20-win campaign for the Wolverines, marking the first time in school history that the team has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons. UVU is now just three wins shy of tying the school record of 23 wins in a season set last year.

Conner Toolson knocked down a shot from long range with 14:38 remaining in the second half against Sam Houston State on Dec. 22 to lift his career point total to 1,002 points as he became just the eighth player in UVU history to score 1,000 career points. Toolson scored 18 points on the night to up his career total to 1,007. He is now fifth on the all-time scoring list with 1,117 points.

As of Feb. 29, Utah Valley holds one of the top shooting percentages in the country as the Wolverines rank 13th nationally in field-goal percentage with a 49.0 percent clip from the floor. UVU also ranks 12th in the country in three-point field goal percentage at 39.1 percent. Jake Toolson ranks 36th nationally with a 57.2 percent field goal mark and 50th nationally from beyond the arc as he holds an 85.9 three-point field goal percentage.

According to data provided by Sports-Reference.com, Jake Toolson is the only player in the country that has played in 20 or more games while shooting better than 56 percent from the field (57.2 percent), 45 percent from three-point range (48.7 percent), and 85 percent from the free throw line (85.9 percent). Such a season has only been accomplished 20 times since 1992. Of that group, only 10 players in that group scored over 300 total points in a season. Toolson is one of those 10 players. The junior guard is in rare company.

BROADCAST INFORMATION
Saturday night's game at WAC newcomer California Baptist will be broadcast live on the WAC Digital Network. The game will also be broadcast over the radio waves as Jim McCulloch enters his ninth season as the voice of the Wolverines. Jason Erickson will be handling the color commentary duties on the radio. ABOUT CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
California Baptist enters Saturday night's contest against the Wolverines with a 15-12 overall record and a 6-7 mark in WAC play. After winning four straight, the Lancers have dropped two of their last three games, including a 67-65 setback to Seattle U on Thursday night. CBU has three players averaging double figures led by sophomore guard Milan Acquaah at 20.0 points per game. Junior forward Dejon Davis leads the team on the boards, pulling down 9.1 rebounds a game. As a team, CBU averages 79.3 points per game while limiting opponents to a 72.9 points per game average.

SERIES HISTORY VS. CBU
Utah Valley and California Baptist will meet up on the basketball hardwood for just the second time on Saturday night. The game marks the first time that the two teams have me in Riverside.  UVU defeated the Lancers, 79-62, in the first meeting on Jan. 30 at the UCCU Center in Orem.

UVU PICKS UP 20TH WIN OF THE SEASON WITH 77-68 WIN OVER SEATTLE U
BJake Toolson dropped 25 points and Richard Harward added a double-double as Utah Valley knocked off Seattle U, 77-68, on Tuesday night at the Redhawk Center.

The Wolverines improved to 20-8 on the season and 9-4 in WAC play, bringing them into a tie for second place with Grand Canyon. The Redhawks fall to 15-13 on the year and 3-10 in conference play.
 
Utah Valley secured its second-straight 20-win season, marking the first-ever back-to-back 20-win seasons in school history. The 43 combined wins over the last two seasons is also the most in a two-year span in UVU history. The win over the Redhawks is the first road win in Seattle for UVU head coach Mark Pope.

"We'd never won up here and this was not a pretty game, but I'm proud of our guys and how they hung in there and kept battling to come up with the win," said Pope. "This is our third game on short notice and that's a great job by our guys. This league is so deep so we need to keep playing better and maintain our discipline and we'll be able to do some special things."
 
After falling behind 8-2 to start the game, the Wolverines used a 7-0 run, punctuated by a Harward dunk, to take a 9-8 lead with 12:49 in the half. Both teams battle back and forth until Utah Valley used another 9-1 run to push their lead to 27-20, with every basket coming in the paint. The Wolverines maintained their lead as they went into the half up 32-27 on a Harward layup in the closing minute.  
 
Isaiah White started off the second half with a dunk as the Wolverines pushed the lead out to nine points. After exchanging baskets, Jake Toolson scored five straight and Baylee Steele hit his first three of the year as part of an 8-3 run. The Redhawks used a 6-0 run to trip the lead down to four, but UVU responded with an 8-0 run to put in back out to a twelve-point advantage with 9:33 to go in the game. Seattle U chipped away at the lead, using a 10-2 run to cut it down to 66-60 with 3:20 to go in the contest. The Wolverines iced the game away, using a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 13 points before coasting to the 77-68 victory.
 
Utah Valley shot 49 percent from the field while holding the Redhawks to 38.5 percent for the game. The Wolverines won the battle in the paint, 34-26, while doubling up the Redhawks in free throw attempts. UVU was also able to protect the ball, turning the ball over only nine times and converting ten Seattle U turnovers into 11 points.

UVU STAT LEADERS
Jake Toolson leads Utah Valley in scoring at 16.7 points per game, followed closely behind by Conner Toolson at 12.5 points a contest. The Toolson duo has scored nearly 40 percent of UVU's points this season. Jake has been impressive from the floor, shooting 57.2 percent (162-of-283), including a team-best 48.7 percent (58-of-119) clip from three-point range. He also leads UVU with an 85.9 percent (85-of-99) clip from the free throw line. Baylee Steele leads UVU on the boards, pulling down 7.2 rebounds a game, while TJ Washington leads the team in assists at 4.1 a game.

TOOLSON HOLDS HIGHEST THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE MARK IN UVU HISTORY
Jake Toolson currently holds a 48.7 percent mark from long range this season, connecting on an impressive 58-of-119 shots from deep. The mark currently bests the current UVU single season record of 46.8 percent (65-of-139) by Ryan Toolson during the 2003-04 season.

UVU'S HOME WIN STREAK ENDS AT 22, WOLVERINES 27-2 AT HOME OVER LAST TWO SEASONS
Utah Valley won a school-record 22 straight games at home dating from a win over UTSA on Nov. 29, 2017 to a win over UTRGV on Jan. 17, 2019.  The previous UVU home win streak record was 17 games, which was set from the 2004-05 season to the 2005-06 season. UVU holds an impressive 27-2 record at home over the last two seasons. Utah Valley holds an all-time 177-47 (79 percent) record in 13 seasons at the UCCU Center. The Wolverines are averaging 13.6 wins a season on their home hardwood. UVU finished play at home last season with a school-record 16-1 record. The team holds an 10-1 record at home this season.

UVU RECORDS BACK-TO-BACK 20-WIN SEASONS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY
Utah Valley won a school-record 23 games just a season ago and defeated Seattle U on Feb. 26 for its 20th win of the season. It marks the first time in program history that UVU has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons. There have now been six 20-win seasons in UVU's 15-year Division I history, two of which have been recorded under head coach Mark Pope.

JAKE TOOLSON TIES SCHOOL RECORD WITH 41 CONSECUTIVE FREE THROWS MADE
Redshirt junior guard Jake Toolson knocked down 41 straight shots at the free throw line before missing a shot at the charity stripe against New Mexico State on Jan. 19. It ties Holton Hunsaker's mark of 41 straight set during the 2011-12 season. Toolson was just 11 free throws away from tying the WAC consecutive free throws made record, which is 52 in a row set by Rob Robbins of New Mexico during the 1989-90 season. The NCAA record for consecutive free throws made is 85 in a row set by Butler's Darnell Archey over three seasons (2000-03). Toolson has knocked down 70 of his last 78 free throws (90 percent).

THREE-POINT STREAKING
Utah Valley has now hit a three-point field goal in 126 straight games. The last time UVU played in a game without hitting a shot from beyond the arc was on Feb. 7, 2015 at Seattle U.

UVU RECEIVING VOTES IN COLLEGEINSIDER.COM MID-MAJOR TOP-25 POLL
Utah Valley continues to receive votes in this week's edition of the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll. It marks the fourth time this season that the Wolverines have received votes in the poll. UVU received two votes last week and are now receiving six this week. Gonzaga continues to hold the top spot in the poll. WAC foe New Mexico State comes in at No. 7, while Sam Houston State comes in at No. 18. UVU defeated Sam Houston State, 85-79, on Dec. 22 at the UCCU Center.

THIRD-BEST NCAA NET RATING IN THE WAC
As of Feb. 28, Utah Valley's NCAA net rating is 94 according to NCAAsports.com.  The Wolverines have one of the best non-conference NCAA net rating wins of the season with its victory over No. 90 Fresno State.  The Wolverines hold the third-best net rating in the WAC as the team sits behind New Mexico State (58) and Grand Canyon (78). UVU is ahead of California Baptist (172), UTRGV (175), Seattle U (191), CSU Bakersfield (211), UMKC (222), and Chicago State (352).

WAC'S LEAGUE RATING AT 14
The Western Athletic Conference holds the No. 14 spot in Ken Pom's conference rankings. The WAC sits at 14 ahead of the Sun Belt (15), Conference USA (16), Missouri Valley (17), Horizon (18), Atlantic Sun (19), Colonial (20), Big South (21) Patriot (22), Big West (23), Summit League (24), Ohio Valley (25) America East (26), Big Sky (27), Metro (28), Southland (29), Northeast (30), Southwestern (31), and Mid-Eastern (32).

UTAH VALLEY'S KENPOM.COM RATING IS 93
According to KenPom.com, Utah Valley ranks 93 out of the 353 teams in the country. The Wolverines rank 93 ahead of such teams as Missouri (95), UCLA (97), Oklahoma State (105), Georgia (110), and Utah (111).

CONNER TOOLSON BECOMES EIGHTH PLAYER IN UVU HISTORY TO SCORE 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Conner Toolson knocked down a shot from long range with 14:38 remaining in the second half against Sam Houston State on Dec. 22 to lift his career point total to 1,002 points as he became just the eighth player in UVU history to score 1,000 career points. Toolson scored 18 points on the night to up his career total to 1,007. He is now fifth on the all-time scoring list with 1,128 points. He needs just 117 points to surpass UVU great Ronnie Price for the fourth spot on the all-time list.
