PHOENIX, Arizona – Utah Valley University jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold on, falling 8-4 at Grand Canyon University on Saturday night. On the strength of a pair of three-run home runs, the Lopes (21-13, 3-0) swept the three-game series that opened the WAC regular season.
Linnah Rebolledo homered to lead off the second inning and, after
Jordan Freas was hit by a pitch,
Peyton Prigge hit a two-run home run to give the Wolverines (7-15, 0-3) a 3-0 lead. Grand Canyon answered in the bottom of the inning, getting all three runs back on a three-run home run from Kaylee Dietrich.
UVU regained the lead in the third when
Basia Query singled with two outs and then eventually scored from first when a hit into right-center off the bat of Rebolledo was bobbled.
Grand Canyon would score five unanswered runs to close out the contest though, getting its second three-run homer, from Savannah Tourville, in the fourth and then added two more insurance runs in the sixth.
Rebolledo finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Wolverines while four Lopes had multi-hit games including Tourville, who also drove in four runs. Prigge's home run was the first of the freshmen's career and came not far from where she played in high school at Horizon in nearby Scottsdale.
After 22 straight games away from home to start the season, Utah Valley will open the home schedule on Tuesday with a doubleheader against BYU as part of the UCCU Crosstown Clash. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. MT at Wolverine Field. The Wolverines will also host UMKC in WAC play with a single game next Friday at 2 p.m. MT and a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. MT.
