LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Utah Valley University was on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel, falling 1-0 at New Mexico State on Friday in the opener of a three-game WAC softball series.
The Wolverines (11-18, 3-4) saw their four-game win streak halted with the Aggies (18-14, 2-2) earning the win behind a 10-strikeout shutout from Samaria Diaz, who improved to 7-6.
UVU starter
Devyn Cretz (8-8) allowed just one run while striking out two in her complete-game effort but the difference was a two-out, RBI base hit by Victoria Castro that scored Jeanelle Medina in the third inning.
Brianna Moeller went 2-for-3 at the plate while
Jordan Freas contributed a double for the Wolverines. Utah Valley threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out but Diaz pitched out of the jam.
The Wolverines will wrap up their series against NM State with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. MT.
