OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University dropped a 1-0 pitcher's duel against Utah State University on Saturday afternoon in the final home game of the season for the Wolverines.
Following the game, Utah Valley honored its seniors who were suiting up for the final time at Wolverine Field. All five who were recognized on the field made starts in the game with
Brianna Moeller going 3-for-4 in her home finale. Seniors
Kaylee Bott,
Skylar Cook,
Madison Sisco and
Abbie Tuttle joined Moeller in Saturday's lineup.
The Aggies (14-28) got the game's only run in the sixth when Stephanie Reed singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice and then scored when Ryann Holmes had a pinch-hit RBI single.
The Wolverines nearly took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With runners at first and second and two down,
Lyndsay Steverson hit a hard liner that seemed destined for the corner in right, but Bailee Trapp jumped and snagged the ball at first to end the inning.
Delaney Hull (10-12) allowed seven scattered hits in notching the complete-game shutout while UVU starter
Devyn Cretz (11-15) surrendered six hits in taking the tough-luck loss.
In addition to Moeller's three-hit day, Sisco doubled while Bott and Tuttle each had base hits in their final home game.
The Wolverines and Aggies will meet again on Sunday, this time in Logan, at 1 p.m. MT in the final regular season game for UVU. The WAC Tournament begins next Wednesday in Phoenix with the Wolverines entering as the No. 4 seed and facing No. 5 seed Kansas City.
