PHOENIX – Senior
Madison Sisco went 3-for-3 and hit a go-ahead three-run home run for Utah Valley University, but Grand Canyon University scored four times in the bottom of the inning to win 6-4 at the 2019 WAC Tournament on Thursday. The loss ends the season for the Wolverines (15-31) while the Lopes (32-23) survive and advance into Friday's action.
Brianna Moeller,
Basia Query and Lyndsday Steverson each added two hits apiece for UVU. In her final game as a Wolverine, Moeller went 2-for-4 to finish 5-for-7 in the tournament. Sisco was 4-for-5 with the home run, double and five runs batted in in the tournament.
"I am so incredibly proud of this group and especially this senior class -- everyone of them poured their hearts into that game," said UVU head coach
TJ Hubbard. "They played selflessly and competed fearlessly right up until the last out. I am forever grateful for the effort and contributions that
Skylar Cook,
Abbie Tuttle,
Brianna Moeller,
Kaylee Bott and
Madison Sisco provided to UVU Softball over their careers. They will be missed dearly."
Utah Valley trailed 2-1 in the sixth when Sisco delivered her fifth home run of the season to give the Wolverines a 4-2 lead. Steverson led off the inning with a base hit and was at third with two down when Bott – who had three hits in Wednesday's tournament opener -- was hit by a pitch. That proved pivotal when Sisco battled through an eight-pitch at-bat before lifting a 2-2 pitch just over the wall down the line in left.
Grand Canyon's rally in the sixth started with back-to-back singles from Madelyn Dowdle and Kaylee Dietrich. Holland hit a hard grounder in the hole that ricocheted off of
Karleigh Olsen's glove and trickled into left, resulting in an RBI double. That made it a 4-3 game and put runners at second and third with nobody out.
The Lopes tied it on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded when Katelyn Acton beat an attempt at home and then scored two more runs on walks that forced in runs.
The Wolverines got a two-out single from Query to bring Steverson to the plate as the potential tying run, but her ball down the line in left was tracked down to end it.
Early in the contest, GCU got a pair of big hits in the bottom of the fourth when Dowdle led off with a double off the top of the wall in left. After she was sacrificed to third, Kaileigh Holland homered to left to give Grand Canyon a 2-0 lead.
Utah Valley got a run back in the fifth when Sisco doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a sacrifice by Olsen and then scored on a base hit to center from Moeller.
