PK the difference in 1-0 exhibition loss at No. 20 Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – A second-half penalty kick provided the game's only goal as No. 20 Portland defeated Utah Valley University, 1-0, in an exhibition match in front of 4,010 fans at Merlo Field.

After a scoreless first half, Luke Hendel converted the PK in the 51st minute of the match for the Pilots.

"Portland is a very good side, and the environment was fantastic for an exhibition match," UVU head coach Greg Maas said. "We had some quality moments throughout, but we were also confronted with areas of the game we need to improve upon — that's why we play these games. That said, it was an entertaining exhibition, and Portland was the right opponent to help us prepare for our opener next week vs. Cal Poly."

It was the lone exhibition for the Wolverines, who now prep for the 2019 opener next Friday night at Clyde Field in a 7:30 p.m. kick against Cal Poly. The Pilots won both of their exhibition contests, including a 3-0 shutout of No. 22 Oregon State.

Next Friday's opener will also include the UVU women's team opening its home schedule, also against Cal Poly, at 5 p.m. MT.
