UVU to face trio of matches in Honolulu

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley's volleyball team is headed to the Aloha state for a three-day slate of competition in the Hawaii Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Volleyball Challenge, where the Wolverines will face matchups against UCLA, #18 Hawaii and West Virginia, September 12-14.
 
UVU opens the weekend of play with a match against UCLA on September 12 at 8:45pm MT, followed by a next-day game against #18 ranked Hawaii on September 13 at 11pm MT, and capped by a final contest against West Virginia on September 14 at 8pm MT.
 
This marks the first ever appearance for the Wolverines against the Bruins of UCLA on the volleyball court. UCLA is currently at a 3-2 overall record and went 13-14 in the 2018 season. The Bruins are averaging 13.1 kills, 15.9 digs, 1.4 aces and 2.5 blocks per set with 37 total blocks so far in the season. 
 
The Wolverines are also looking for a first-time victory over the #18 ranked The Rainbow Wahine of Hawaii, who historically have met twice, as Utah Valley dropped both matches against Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine are currently sitting on a perfect 6-0 record and went 18-9 for the 2018 season, finishing in the NCAA 1st & 2nd Rounds against Baylor. Hawaii is currently averaging 13.64 kills, 0.92 aces, 13.68 digs and 3.04 blocks per set. 
 
UVU will also meet first-time opponent West Virginia in Honolulu, as the Mountaineers enter the weekend with a 6-2 record in the 2019 season. West Virginia is currently averaging 12.77 kills, 1.00 aces, 13.91 digs and 2.32 blocks per set, hitting .223 as a team. 
 
Despite an 0-4 start to the season, the Wolverines rebounded with two wins last weekend over Portland State and UC Davis. UVU is averaging 11.88 kills, 1.40 aces, 13.36 digs and 2.76 blocks per set, hitting .182 as a team.
 
Kazna Tarawhiti leads the team and the WAC with 4.04 kills per set, while teammate Bailey Christensen follows behind with 2.18 kps. Makaila Jarema and Jasmine Niutupuivaha top the squad with 1.59 and 1.16 blocks per set. Junior libero Seren Merrill also posts 4.12 digs per set from the backrow for UVU.
 
After the trio of contests in the Hawaii-hosted volleyball challenge, the Wolverines return to Utah for an in-state matchup against Utah State on September 18, followed by a run of home events at Lockhart Arena.
