OREM—Head coach
Mark Madsen has announced the hiring of
Michael Johnson as the director of basketball operations on his men's basketball staff at Utah Valley. Jonson comes to UVU after working the past three years as an assistant coach at the College of Idaho.
Â
"
Michael Johnson is a real up and comer in college basketball," said Madsen. "During his time at both Weber State and the College of Idaho he was a key contributor to the success in each program, including two straight Division II Final Four appearances. Michael's work ethic is second to none. During an interim transition period this past summer, Michael's on-court work with our players was outstanding. Michael is already imprinting his high standard across our program in many ways. I am excited to welcome Michael and his wife, Katie, to Orem Utah."
Â
During his three years at the College of Idaho, Johnson helped lead the Yotes to two-straight Cascade Conference Tournament titles and a pair of semifinal appearances at the NAIA Division II National Championship in both 2018 and 2019.Â
Â
The Eagle, Idaho native earned a golf scholarship at Weber State University where he was named team captain in 2014 and 2015. He was honored as WSU's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2015. He worked as a student manager/assistant for the WSU men's basketball team (2015-16), helping the program win a Big Sky Conference championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Johnson served as an assistant coach for the boys' basketball team at Eagle High School for the 2016-17 season.Â
