Story Links

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Utah Valley fell in the night cap against the #18 home team Hawaii on Friday in four conclusive sets (20-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-25).

Set one and two went play-by-play in both contests, as the Wolverines and the Rainbow Wahine ended both games at 20-25. In the first, Utah Valley held a 7-6 starting lead over Hawaii with kills from Kazna Tarawhiti and Bailey Christensen. A 0-6 run from the Rainbow Wahine in the middle of the first set gave Hawaii a comfortable lead to finish out the opening competition with the win for the #18 ranked team. Tarawhiti tallied 12 kills to open the first two sets of the match.

In a decisive third set, the Wolverines battled for a 13-3 lead over #18 Hawaii, as Tarawhiti and freshman outside hitter Tori Dorius become a strong presence on the front line for UVU as the Wolverines put together 13 kills and a 7-0 run over Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine cut the deficit to 20-15 late in the fourth, but would not prove enough as UVU took their first set of the night at 25-20.

Hawaii took a five-point lead over Utah Valley in the beginning of the fourth and final set. The Wolverines were unable to close the gap, dropping set four to Hawaii, 15-25. Tarawhiti managed five kills in the final set of the night.

Tarawhiti headed the Wolverines, as she tallied a season-high 21 kills on the night, while teammate Bailey Christensen collected 12 kills for a .222% average. Dorius also put together a .364% average with five kills and two blocks.

UVU will finish up the Hawaii Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Volleyball Challenge on Saturday, September 14 against West Virginia at 8:00pm MT.
