Wolverines stunned by golden goal against UC Irvine

OREM, Utah – Three days after getting a golden goal in the second overtime to win at home, Utah Valley University was on the wrong end of a golden goal at the hands of UC Irvine, 2-1, on Monday night at Clyde Field.

Victor Falck got his head on a Jose Ortiz corner kick in the 102nd minute of the match – just over 90 seconds into the second overtime – to give the Anteaters (2-3-1) the win.

Blake Frischknecht scored his second goal of the year for the Wolverines (2-2-1) to tie match at 1-1 in the 72nd minute. Sterling Penniston-John lifted the ball with his left foot from the back line past midfield to Frishknecht, who did the rest of the work and score just inside the far post into the side netting.

UC Irvine struck early when Eder Oliva found a deflected pass just outside the 18, made one defender miss and fired from 20 yards out for the game's first goal in the 19th minute. The scored remained one-nil until Frischknecht's equalizer over 50 minutes later.

"I'll be honest, after Irvine scored, I thought we settled down and took control of much of the match," UVU head coach Greg Maas said. "Make no mistake, Irvine is a very good side. We tested our depth today, and I couldn't be more proud of the quality performance we put together. To lose in double overtime on a set piece is never easy to accept. This team, however, is resilient and we'll learn from this as we prepare for our final two non-conference matches in Las Vegas against Santa Clara and Saint Mary's."

Both teams finished with nine shots with six on goal for UC Irvine and five on frame for Utah Valley. Mitch Jensen had four saves for the Wolverines, including one off the left foot of Carlos Becerra-Gomez with just over two minutes left in regulation.

Utah Valley heads to Las Vegas later this week for the Johann Memorial Classic at UNLV. The Wolverines will face Santa Clara on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. MT and No. 7 Saint Mary's on Sunday at noon PT/1 p.m. MT.
