OREM, Utah - Utah Valley's home contest against Weber State came up just short in a four set battle, 1-3 (25-21, 20-25, 21-25, 14-25) on Thursday night.
The Wolverines came out strong in the first against the Wildcats, posting a 7-3 lead early in the set. A handful of kills from
Megan Childs and
Jasmine Niutupuivaha then gave UVU a six-point run to top WSU, 17-9. Niutupuivaha tallied six kills in the opening set while teammates
Bailey Christensen and
Tori Dorius added four a piece.
Set two put the Wolverines trailing the Wildcats early on, 4-9, but a string of kills from
Megan Childs, Dorius and Niutupuivaha would bring UVU back to a 12-12 tie in the middle of the second. A four-point run proved pivotal for WSU, putting them in a final lead of 17-22 over Utah Valley, to eventually take the set, 20-25. Dorius added five more kills in the set while Niutupuivaha added four.
UVU and WSU produced another tight set in the third, as the scored tied at 16-16 in a battle of the front row. A late surge of kills from the Wildcats' side of the court would put them on top, 18-21 and a trio of kills from WSU's Kennedy Williams would seal the third set, 12-25. Dorius would again tally five more kills.
Utah Valley found themselves behind in the fourth set after Weber State posted an eight-point run to create a 2-9 gap. With a battle back to stay in the fourth and final set for the Wolverines, Dorius and Childs added a pair of kills each but would not be enough as Utah Valley dropped the match, 14-25.
Utah Valley breaks for a week until next meeting the defending WAC champion, New Mexico State at home in Lockhart Arena on Thursday, September 26 at 6pm MT.
